You're basically comparing Unterhaching to Frankfurt, although the city of Frankfurt is, what, 50 times the size of Haching and has a rich Bundesliga tradition. Personally I think it's impressive when a club based in a city of 30,000 can draw 3,000 people despite being at the bottom of the table in the second division. When they were in the first division they averaged around 10,000 or so, didn't they? That's pretty damn good for a tiny little town like Unterhaching.
theres clubs in germany based in smaller towns, poorer towns with big clubs to compete with that still get more than unterhaching! plus alot of unterhachings suporters come from the surrounding country and alot of them come from Munich aswell a city of three million!
theres clubs in Ireleand that play in a small amatear league that has no support fom the goverment and thers another five teams in the same city as them that still get more than haching

Seriously, what clubs are you referring to? To the best of my knowledge, there is no town in either of the top two divisions that is even remotely as small as Unterhaching. And Unterhaching has to compete with Bayern and 1860, so that cancels out your theory. How many people do you think Unterhaching attracts from Munich (population: 1,185,400, by the way)? Answer: practically no one, as they have better things to do in their own city.
And do these tiny Irish teams you mention have to compete with a European Cup winner and perennial CL participant just 20 miles away?
Fact is that for a very small town, Unterhaching does well to draw a few thousand people to its games and remain semi-competitive in pro football. You should leave it at that.

To my knowledge Aue is the smallest town in german pro-soccer....
Not that that really matters...
As I said I dont care how small their city is, it doesnt change the fact that they are boring and the fact that nobody in munich cares about them just underlines that...

And they proved my point once again:
Last Sunday:
Haching vs Ahlen in front of an awesome, unbelievable crowd of 1500 (in words: Onethousandfivehundred) people!
And they dont even have the excuse of a monday, or fridaynightgame... Nope, it defintely was on a sudnayafternoon....
Honestly, who actually likes to see something like that?!
There are 100 more attractive clubs than those two all throughout the lower divisions...
I mean common, my local 4th divison suburb-Handballclub attracts like 800 or more regularly, so what the hack is 1500?! and thats just handball...

I was there 3 weeks ago when we drawed them 1-1...
I have to say the stadium is kinda nice, but the club itself is still as interesting a the famous bag of rice in china...
When we were there, on a friday night there were like 15000 people. the whole one stand was just plain empty, there were like 5 people on it. the athmosphere wasnt worth a dime... and all that even though they had won the last 6 or 7 consecutive home-games and are going for promotion... And I mean, I dont wanna sound arrogant or anything but i believe in 2nd Division Frankfurt is still one of the bigger teams that could draw at least a couple of people (even though we do suck this season). I mean i dont wanna know how this stadium looks when they lost three times in a row and play Unterhaching.... is it gonna be like 5000 people?!
Aye, then you look at the league table and see that Frankfurt are ELEVEN points behind the zebras and still in financial difficulties - despite their great attendances. My own team, Greenock Morton, outnumbers every team in its division in terms of support but is still only in 4th place. It's what happens on the pitch that counts, and Duisburg are proving that right now.
Attendances will be much higher when MSV get promoted - and they will.
Horrible city, yes - but a good team on the pitch, and that's all that matters.
If any of the MSV fans who visited Greenock to watch Morton last week are reading this - hope you enjoyed yourselves and had a safe journey home. :)
By the way, who does everyone think will get promoted? I think Fuerth's loss against Aue (who admittedly are good at home) is going to start them on a slide. They don't have the squad depth to keep up the challenge for the rest of the season, which is a shame as I'd love to see them go up :( I think it'll be MSV as champions, Koeln in 2nd and Aachen in 3rd.

Yes, they don't have much fans, but those 10.000 hardcore fans or the 3.000 of Oberhausen I respect much more than those who support a different club then their hometown club because they are "bigger" and stuff. In a way they are "erfolgsfans" too.
Makes me wonder why besides Hannover96 you list Schlacke as your team since this season....

Duisburg has a population of about 510.000.
I have been to Cottbus, Frankfurt/Oder, Jena, Zwickau, Gelsenkirchen, Memphis but if I had to chose to name the most ugly city I've ever been to I would not hesitate one second and say Duisburg.
I guess you never have been to Gelsenkirchen "downtown" as the stadium is located directly at the highway. Ugliest railway station in the world and at all more of a sh1tehole (same award goes to Oberhausen, btw).

Wacker Burghausen: 19.000 (though heavily sponsored by Wacker pharmaceutics)
Erzgebirge Aue: 19.000

Aue have pretty good attendances, but I guess they can draw on quite a big area with not too many pro teams nearby. Zwickau's just up the road but they suck, Chemnitz is the same but probably too far to make a big difference. But I think it'll be one of those clubs that represents a district (Erzgebirge) rather than just a town. If it was just Aue then they'd be somewhere around the 4th or 5th level of football rather than the 2nd.
I guess Burghausen relies on local support and the Wacker corporation (as said above) since it's so close to Muenchen.

Do you wanny fight with me young man? ;)
My family is from Gelsenkirchen. One of my my unkles still lives right to the old Parkstadion and that was also the place where I watched my first 5 Bundesliga matches as a little child whenever we visited him.
I have been to Gelsenkirchen several times and while I agree that the only nice thing about it is Schalke (feel free to disagree) Duisburg was just depressing IMO.
I still love Schalke but I have lived in Hannover my whole life so I obviously love them much more.

Yeah, Frankfurt isnt doing too good this season and they are well behind msv, nobody said anything different... so what does that have to do with duisburg drawing redicolous crowds?!
Like last sunday, they had 18000 at their DERBY vs oberhausen...
And that with their really impressing home-strength! I just dont get that...
I mean 18000 isnt bad for a 2nd div. game, no doubt, but if youre way up there leading the table, you havent lost a game at home yet, its your best season in years, and then you even have a derby! dont you think that should be enough reasons to sell out your stadium?! if not, than you just overtook yourself and built a too big one, thats just my oppinion tough...
Now to your question concerning promotion:
- I think Duisburg is gonna make it.
- Cologne, after seing them last friday im not so sure anymore. They seemed kinda arrogant, and that could become a problem for them. They shouldnt think that everyone is just gonna hand the points over to them like burghausen and cottbus did... and they sure did seem to think that on friday, as the heavily cried after the game about Vasoski taking on Poldi to harsh... I mean common, this isnt Haching where they are proud to see someone like him score against their own team... :D If Polid cant live with everyone taking him on hard, then he shouldnt play 2nd div. I mean we all saw what heppens if you dont have a good defender against him... they should make it though they just have way to much luck this season to not make it...
- Fürth might drop out there yet. They just dont have the depth for it, plus they still are gonna have to come here to Frankfurt...
- Aachen is a serious contender, but they have bad days quite often...
- Saarbrücken is doing great, but they arent gonna be up there at the end, not enough depth, and they still have to play most topteams away i think.
- Frankfurt, well, if and only if we win the next games vs Dresden and Saarbrücken, we might still have a word yet. Good thing is that all topteams have to come here in the 2nd half of the season. Aachen and Cologne already did lose, Saarbrücken, Fürth and Duisburg are going to too, im pretty sure of that, we play great at home. The problem is well probably leave points in Dresden and Oberhausen and games like that, which is quite typical for Eintracht. Weve always been known as a good opponent to built up teams that are way down there... Karlsruhe know all about that... :(
So concluding, Duisurg is gonna make it, Cologne probably too and Fürth, Aachen and maybe Frankfurt are fighting about #3...

Fair enough, but like you say, they have years of local guys going off to support other Ruhr teams to compete with. Fortunatley, from what I've seen, a lot of the MSV support right now is quite young, so it can only get bigger (see www.session-deluxe.de for some good away pics :). And like you say, 18k is good for 2. Bundesliga. It's not too big a stadium if the support is going to grow, and if they're going to get promoted to 1. Bundesliga. Next year there will be even more sell-out games (IF they go up.)
For what it's worth, I'd quite like to see Frankfurt go up next season as they are a "big" club that has 1. Bundesliga pedigree. But this season, seeing Fuerth get promoted would be amazing.
Jürgen Kohler is Duisburg's new coach.
