This was just pointed out to me, but the weekend before the WCQ in Port of Spain is Carnival.
If that's not a reason to take a mid-winter vacation in Trinidad, I don't know what is. Carnival and a World Cup Qualifier!

Has anybody been down to T&T for a US Nats game? What is like? Are the fans decent?

I went down for the US - Trin game in 96 as part of a family vacation. The fans are more than decent, they are quite friendly. Personally, I didn't have a bad experience when I was there. At the time, I was 13 years old...but it was still an absolute fun trip. Stayed in the same hotel as the team too.
From what i remember, the country, was safe. I felt safe.
Any other questions let me know. I'd go again if I could, especially with Carnival going on that week, but college + spare money don't mix.

I went to the lame duck WCQ in November, 2001. We stayed near the Queen's Park Savannah. I really enjoyed Port of Spain. I felt quite safe, the beer (mainly Carib and Stag) was cheap, and the people there were nice.
Something that caught me off guard was that the population is roughly 60% African origin and 40% Asian Indian origin. The Spaniards killed off the native population, and the British brought in the Africans and Indians to work the sugar fields.
What it means is that you can get a really good curry! :p

I recall my parents drinking their heads off for those few days in 96. the exchange rate at the time was 8T+T to $1american, which made the guiness in the hotel bar about 1.25 american a pint. They certainly enjoyed themselves.
Port of Spain was def a enjoyable place. The beaches on the island we went to were incredible. Another tourist attraction, especially if you have a lady friend/kids, would be the Asa Wright Center. They take you on nature walks through the rain forrest(if thats what it is). All sorts of exotic flowers, trees, birds, everything.

In 2001, the rate was 6.2 TT$ to 1 US$.
Carib brewery recently bought out the brewery on Grenada, which brews Guinness. But I'm wondering if it's in business since the hurricane clobbered Grenada.
Hmmm www.caribbeer.com seems to be down right now.
