Champions League - Phase 2 - Draw

The draw for the second phase of the Champions League will take place on the 17th December in Nyon, Switzerland (12:00 CET). Teams who finished first in their respective groups will play teams who finished runners-up.

No team from the same country (football association) or the same qualifying group can play each other at this stage. Ties are over two legs and will be played during the days of 22nd/23rd of February and 8th/9th March. Remember that away goals count after 90 minutes and should the game still be tied, then extra-time (no Silver/Golden goal) and then penalties if need be will be played.

(Country in brackets.)

First seeds:

Monaco [FRA]
Juventus [ITA]
Bayer Leverkusen [GER]
Lyon [FRA]
AC Milan [ITA]
Inter Milan [ITA]
Chelsea [ENG]
Arsenal [ENG]

Second seeds:

Liverpool [ENG]
Bayern Munich [GER]
Real Madrid [ESP]
Manchester United [ENG]
Barcelona [ESP]
Werder Bremen [GER]
Porto [PRT]
PSV Eindhoven [NED]

So in theory, Manchester United can draw Monaco, Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen, AC Milan and Inter. Giving them a higher probability of drawing a Serie A team. Have a gander at the other mock draws in the other threads and see for yourself.

All of the English teams, plus Leverkusen, are limited to 5 of the 8 teams in the opposite pot.

I read somewhere that Man. United's coach put on a reserve team because he'd rather avoid Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern, and Porto, some of which have gotten in Man. United's way before. He probably has more confidence against Italian teams (they defeated Inter and Juventus on the way to the final in 1999). I wonder if he'll think that if they draw AC Milan.

Ugh pity the team that draws Barca (hopefully not Inter)

The rest of the 2nd seeds are all beatable with Porto, PSV and Liverpool being the weakest.

I heard the same thing last year...Porto being the weakest!!!!!

In fact, I wouldn't be entirely surprised if a winner came from the Group 2 seeds (Barca, ManU, FC Porto, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, etc). More impossible things have happened in the Champions League.

Porto has the lowest odds in Europe according to those English betting houses or whatever. Even PSV is above them. That doesn't make sense to me.

My rank from hardest to easiest teams looks like:

Group Winners
Chelsea (2 teams in 1 squad, a coach who hasn't been knocked out of a european playoff in two seasons)
AC Milan (Shevchenko, Kaká, usual solidity, but not unbeatable)
Juventus (1-0, 1-0, 1-0, 1-0...)
Inter Milan (haven't lost a game, Adriano is one of the best forwards these days)
Leverkusen (balanced team, scored 3 in every game at home)
Arsenal (will have a hard time whatever the draw)
Lyon (challenging, but beatable)
Monaco (they can still score lots of goals, but no chance unless they get PSV)

Group Runners up
Barcelona (no comment)
Man. United (can rip you apart at home w/ Ruud & Rooney)
Bayern Munich (looking solid, hard to beat)
Real Madrid (quality players still make a difference in playoffs)
Porto (good strikers, decent defense)
Werder Bremen (good offense, but not hard to break down)
Liverpool (might have a chance depending on their opponent)
PSV (I don't think they have a chance)

The draw this year looks a lot fatter than last season, when we had Celta Vigo, Real Sociedad, Sparta Praha, and Lokomotiv. Keep in mind that if the giants face off, we'll probably see minnow vs minnow, as well.

Yeah alot of the 'big teams' made it through this year. The only disappointments to me were Roma and Valencia (especially the latter who I expected to contend for the CL)

That being said, there's gonna be some mouth-watering matchups in the Round of 16 with some of the most famous European clubs in action! Can't wait for the draw!

Only 2 clubs outside the big 5, FC Porto and PSV... well thats life, even with Valencia, Deportivo, Roma collapsing.
For my team i hope we can avoid Arsenal, Milan and Juventus, if we can´t at least we have almost 3 months to improve our current poor form, so we can only get better in February/March.
I also would like to see AC Milan-Real Madrid, Barcelona-Arsenal, Manchester United-Juventus...

If ever there's a team Real didn't want, it was Juve...Madrid are in big, big trouble. They've got some serious work to do to get their team in condition before the games.

Again? I don't think ManU has ever played Milan in the CL. That's one of the reasons I wanted to see a Milan/ManU game. The other reason is that I think Milan will destroy ManU. ;)

FFFFFFFF********************************CK Barcelona vs Chelsea!!! DAMN!!
My Barça is going to have to play with their hearts on their sleeves. These are the two teams pitched as potential champions right here.

We have 4 Big, Juicy Playoffs that will have everyone buzzing for awhile:
Barcelona - Chelsea
AC Milan - Man. United (yes, yes, yes! I so wanted to see this!)
Real Madrid - Juventus
Arsenal - Bayern

AC - Man.U, Bar - Che, Lyon - Bremen, Inter - Porto will be scheduled for the same day (Tue or Wed).

RM - Juve, Ars - Bayern, Leverkusen - Liverpool, Monaco - PSV will be on the other day.

Inter - Porto will be a good one, too. The other 3 playoffs look a little boring, but I'll bet we'll see a dark horse semifinalist come out of them.
