I haven't been to a gym where I can't do about 15-20 leg curls with the maximum weight (both legs). I one gym it was 100 kg

I once did a squat with 100kg, I never usually try to go for max weight.

i wouldnt go for max i would go for endurance because you dont want bulk u want long lean muscles.

my squatting is terrible, ass to heels only about 225...but leg press is at least 450 (not saying it's much, but they are sure far off).

deadlifts are bad too,i can deadlift about 225

weight training and soccer are almost unrelated. Lift weights if you want to get better at lifting weights. Doing repetitive motion soccer (also called curvers) will strengthen the muscles used in your leg to play soccer. plus you run the risk of injury with squats.

You are an idiot if they are unrelated then why are they promoted by every major club. Weight training is beneficial to just about every sport.

yeah pros do weight training. but they get the huge muscles from training everyday. you dont have to do weights to get big legs. and i know what your saying by his legs weigh him down, they probably would if he didnt do a lot of agility.

I hate people who make ignorant comments like that -- big legs would never weigh you do. Muscle in your legs are productive -- unless your legs are so gigantic you can't move them, the muscle is going to promote speed, not hinder it. I didn't say they would weigh him down, but whoever did needs to be shot for spreading ignorance.

Yea, I recieve Bravo Sport(the german mag) from my aunt every week, and most of the time there is an article in there on how to gain speed and leg strength. Partially(probably 3/5 the rest is just runnin and so forth) its by doing squats and weight exercises. So if you dont know wha your talkin about don't post!!!!!!!!!

I can leg press 622lbs and squat 435lbs. I have muscular legs and I've never found weight training to make me slower, only faster and more powerful on field.

It's been two or three years since I last tried to max. My max squat was 530 lbs. at the time, haven't maxed leg press or leg curl but I don't have any trouble curling 135 lbs (highest I've tried) for 80 or more reps.

For some reason I also seem to be more prone to leg cramps than most other players - not sure if it's related.

how much do you weight

About 190 right now, closer to 180 at full fitness. Probably explains some of it, at least.

having bigger muscle on your body does weigh u down
not literally, but it does.
in an interview with becks he said he was slower around the pitch because he had put on a stone of muscle.....
he would have been told that by the professionalsthat the england coaching staff employ.....u cantargue with the professionals.

It isn't as simlpe as that. It depends on what you "teach" the muscle to do. M. Greene's muscles don't weigh him down because they are trained for speed and explosiveness. But in case of a body builder who lifts weights really slowly they might. You can train you muscles to become faster and slower. In the Beckham case it could be about stamina not speed. The extra weight gets him more tired so his sprints will be worse too.

You can't argue with the professionals is right .. I have heard the same things that I am saying from Tom Shaw, the Strength and Conditioning coach of the New England Patriots, who have won 2 Superbowls in 3 years. Look at all of the NFL Running Backs, they certainly move better and faster then just about any soccer players (certainly David Beckham), and they are stacked with muscle.

Green Day is on to something, but he's not quite there.. you can train them to be more efficient, like a sprinter would, through focusing on the explosive movemnts, plyo's, etc., but even those bodybuilders he referred too are fairly athletic. It's pretty tough to be slowed down by muscle; maybe, maybe it wouldn't speed you up if you trained a certain way, but it certainly shouldn't hinder you.

And for the record, I'm quite sure most bodybuilders dont lift really slowly, they would do the "negative" movement slowly and then explode in most cases.

Depends, if you are lifting max weights, you are training your CNS more than anything else, also your fast twitch fibres which make up less of the total mass. Thats where the speed comes from. High reps build slow twitch fibres which would add mass without any strength or speed gains. I can only squat about 180 pounds btw and deadlift about the same. :(. I can only bench 140! I am 18 years old, would this be very unusual in America for a 6 foot tall guy weighing 175 pounds? Because most of my friends can't even do as much.
