It will feature Major League baseball, the NBA and European soccer. It will also have Spanish-language sports and news shows, including a round-table discussion of soccer
Hello? MLS anyone?

This will be really cool. I don't speak Spanish but I am keen on more soccer to view.

That's already on ESPN2, which reaches reaches more markets than the new station will, at least into the foreseeable future.

My question is what European soccer will they show. Germany, Spain and England are locked up by FSW. Ditto Argentina and Brazil. That leaves them Holland, Italy and France? I'm sure that is of great appeal to all the hispanic viewers.

Ok, and why not have it available in Spanish as well?
I'm sure they'll need programming, so why not have MLS? All it would cost are 2 extra commentators and you market it as reaching additional households.

ESPN has Champions League rights already, and I'd imagine some other inter-league or international cup matches.

If they pay MLS for it, then great. If MLS has to do the time-buy thing, then forget it. The league hasn't exactly struck it rich on the Latino market.

There's an FSW Espanol as well, though. Anyone know what they're showing?

Ok, and if you're the league and you're trying to expand your hispanic base why not do it?
Package the advertising on there just as you do with the regular MLS matches. Have one set of graphics like FSW does for their matches that are shown on both FSW and FSWEspanol.
I'm sorry, but if the league is serious about marketing to the hispanic crowd in the US this is the perfect opportunity for them to step up and do so and establish the brand from the beginning of the channel.
The time-buy will be relatively cheap, they've got to fill their time with some kind of programming. In fact, it may be free so ESPN can bring viewers to the channel. I haven't seen World Strongest Man dubbed into Spanish yet... They've got to show something... why not MLS?

A certain Web site says that ESPND may replace ESPN2 as the carrier for Champions League games.
Also, having read before about ESPN's negotiating tactics, I would not be surprised to see them begin demanding this channel be carried on many digital systems the next time they go to increase rates.

I read on Tse's website that it is expected that Deportes will replace ESPN2 as the US TV outlet for the UEFA Champions League.
That will suck big time if the new channel is not as available as ESPN2.

It could be good and bad. It's bad because ESPN Deportes is in Spanish, not English, and it won't be as widely available as ESPN2. But it could be good if they show as many games as ESPN LA shows. We will have to wait and see.

And if it crowds FSW off cable systems (like, say, mine) then I would also have to consider it bad.
chayes: I'd be all for MLS showing up on Deportes, but I'm not counting on it, given that MLS has spent 7 years trying to tap into the Latino market and having very little success. I doubt if Deportes will be able to do any better than Univision did with MLS games in terms of ratings. I'd just as soon have the league spend its limited resources elsewhere. Unless, again, ESPN pays them to show the games.

Ollie has said a lot of things that didn't happen. He has said some that have happened, but he's also been dead wrong a number of times:
1. Fox taking over the MLS contract
2. Shootout not on cable at all
I'd take it with a grain of salt, but it is possible given the poor ratings CL games usually get.

I would disagree with that assessment.
Maybe the "let's sign some token players and the Latinos will flock to the stadiums like moths to a flame" strategy hasn't been successful, but I would point out that there are two teams that have fan bases that are at least 50% Latino.

You left out the legendary "FSW to become 24-hour NASCAR network."

And they will have to fill a buttload of time. I could see rebroadcasts of MLS with Spanish commentary if the MLS agreement allows it. Hell, this might be a way for SUM to make a quick buck too.
