not sure if this article has been posted yet, it was in todays tribune. is it me or has been some negative press over the stadium or what? all these articles openly question the economic ability of the stadium, all wondering if it really will do anything. and they make it sound like they really dont want it in the end. i dont know, maybe its just me. im so stoked for it tho, either location is great.

Pretty lengthy article. Good to see the Tribune following the story like it is. One thing from the article I disagree with,
Quote, " The money a soccer fan will spend at the stadium or in a restaurant nearby is money he would have spent, say, at a Jazz game, the association says."
Like hell! I haven't been to a Jazz game since they played at the Salt Palace. Soccer fans and basketball fans are different. If I don't spend my money on RSL, I'm not going to spend it on another sports team.
Another thing from the article,
Quote, "Even more sobering: Rasher's research on where Major League Soccer should expand, to be published in the International Journal of Sport Management, ranks the Salt Lake City area market poorly. Based on a variety of factors including income levels, population growth and percentage of Latino residents, Real Salt Lake "will likely struggle to find a fan base."
Like hell! Those same researches probably would say MLS would have a better chance in Tampa or Miami Florida.

Actually the same research shows Tampa is over saturated with sports teams, but Orlando and Miami Florida could use more. So yes, the research actually shows places like Miami are more likely to have more successful SPORTS teams then SLC. However the research takes no account of what type of sports or the most important engine for MLS teams, a willing investor. That of course, Tampa and Miami DID NOT have.

With a late January or early February deadline approaching, the team is eager to hear what fans think of proposed locations in Murray and Salt Lake City.

Utah MLS club: Build it, and we will play
In the news I know you've all been waiting for, the MLS expansion franchise Real Salt Lake (that's real the Spanish word, not the English word "real," though real does mean "real" - oh, never mind) is pitting Salt Lake City against the neighboring town of Murray (http://www.sltrib.com/utah/ci_2527044) in competing to be the home of the team's new soccer stadium. Whichever city comes up with free land for the stadium, team officials say, will get the team. Then Salt Lake County residents will all get to share responsibility for paying for half the cost of building the $60 million soccer-only facility. Okay, so it's not exactly "Everybody gets a car! I think this article is meant to oppose RSL's stadium... but it sounds good to me! :D

The Utah Taxpayers Association opposes either city subsidizing the soccer stadium, saying the venue won't generate a net increase in spending.
The money a soccer fan will spend at the stadium or in a restaurant nearby is money he would have spent, say, at a Jazz game, the association says.
I can say that of the money that I recently forked out on 3 sets of season tickets, not a penny would have gone to the Jazz.

I can say that of the money that I recently forked out on 3 sets of season tickets, not a penny would have gone to the Jazz.I only go to the Jazz when the 'larry man' gives away free jazz tickets with an oil change, or my boss does not want to go and he gives the 'expense account' tickets to me... that has been alot lately but if they start winning I will never see a game!
I can say I forked out several hundred on Season tickets and RSL gear that would most definitely not have been spent on the Jazz. I like the Jazz but I have already spent more on RSL than I ever have on the Jazz and RSL has not even played a game yet!
something in their calculations are F'ed up

I was wondering how long it would take Field of Schemes to discover Real Salt Lake. All they could do is link to the Trib's story. They are not doing a good research job.
Murray should be offended by being called a town. They are a 30,000 population City.

FWIW, I'm a great MLS fan from Portland, Oregon. I'd love to have MLS come play in our downtown stadium. But since that's not in the plans, the next best thing is for me to visit my daughter who is a student in SLC and see RSL play. I'm planning on doing that at least a couple of times a season and that will be dollars added to the SLC economy that would not be there without Real.
BTW, I have no plans to visit and watch the Jazz.

good artical but i didnt like the this lady's comment.
"Murray and Salt Lake are battling over where a stadium should go when there is a war in Iraq. I wonder if Murray and Salt Lake have their priorities mixed up."
how are the war in iraq and rsl stadium connected? murrays govt cant do anything about the war. dont get me wrong here though.
murray is very tempting with all the land and development but i am still in favor of salt lake getting the stadium. it would be great to finally have an urban stadium in mls. (even though i am not from or anywhere near salt lake city) thats my opinion. its amazing how these 2 cities are fighting over a sss, i never thought i would see the day that would happen, especially when rsl hasnt even played a game.
