Just one thing... when you get your stadium built, don't invite these guys....

"It was justifiable," he said. "They were also trying to protect people, if they go down to the field and knock over the goal post, that sort of thing, we're liable if someone gets hurt. ... We just wanted to force them back into the stands."

Electrocution as a public safety measure. Who would've thought?

I'd be curious where the population center is in the valley. I suspect that Murray is closer to it than downtown SLC.

Big story on the KSL news tonight all about the stadium competition. Gateway seems to be out. So the Downtown site seems to be the Holding Block South of the Grand America. Seems to be a change here. A later story will profile the Murray site.

There was a rendering of a stadium, with quarter circle corner cut-out North West entrance with the name "Grand Real Stadium" catering to Earl Holding's Grand America just to the North. The Urban-retro look is evident. Ebetts Field maybe? It is lacking in good end zone seating and has single tier seating on the East and West. But it takes up the whole block.

Hizzoner Rocky proclaimed Parking, Housing, Entertainment and a BMW in everyone's garage and the Jazz winning the NBA title this year (well maybe not all of them). I remember Dee Dee saying that the baseball stadium would revitalise the neighborhood. It hasen't even got the parking lot across the street paved.

Mark Miller Toyota Just finished a rebuild. The building permit will list the cost, somebody find out. A replacement Dealership might cost up to $5,000,000 and the land in the rest of the block might cost millions. Will this extra cost turn into anything other than high ticket prices?

There may be a zillion hotel rooms nearby, do the mean anything for attendance? Is this a part of town where you would drop off your 14 year old kids for a game and for you to pick them up at 10:00PM? How many "Traveling Salesmen" will come "looking".

City ownership and a lease may not be the best. Who does/pays for what and who gets the revenue? Can the City or County be a benificial landlord. If the Front office needs to add some hanger loops for a banner; will a Work Request be submitted to the Sports Authority who will send it to the Public Works Office, who will send it on to the Budget Office who will put it out to Public Bid (Union only shops) then finaly to the Mayors Office? If you own it, Stacy grabs the nearest Intern or injured Player and hands them the tool box and says go and do it!

It's obvious you're opposed to the stadium being built in Salt Lake City. But it seems that's where it's going.

Here's the proposed stadium rendering:

I like it and think downtown is a GREAT location!

As for Franklin Covey Field, that didn't work because the city, when building it, felt that downtown would develop that far south. It didn't and the stadium is mostly located in a residential neighborhood. This hindered the growth of the area. If the stadium had been built in downtown SLC, I'd bet the impact would have been far greater.

That area is mostly a complete dump right now, if I'm thinking of the right place. I've got a mental picture but I might be thinking of a different block, further west. Almost anything would be a revitalization. Logistically, this has everything Murray has, which is Traxx and parking, and freeway access. But this is also close enough to the downtown shopping district that people could come and do both an event and shopping/dining downtown.

Strangely enough, I think some of this property used to be owned by a relative of mine. Holding harrassed her for years to sell it to him, and she held out until her death bed, because she lived on it and didn't want to move at 80 years old when she was very comfortable. There's been a very strong prejudice in my family against Holding because of the way he treated her. Personally, I would love the city to condemn the property and force Holding to give it up real cheap, and even better for a soccer stadium.

Deseretnews has a new article on the stadium today also. It seems to provide some new information. I hope it gets done at either site, but gets done. What ever is best for SLC and the league is what I'm cheering for.

What a great addition Salt Lake is to the league after reading all of this. It makes me sick to see your stadium situation and how quickly its progressing as compared to Metro. I'd like to see San Antonio also get in the league. I think it could be like SLC in the fact that the only other major league team is the NBA and the local government seems very supportive of the idea.

If the stadium actually comes close to anything resembling this rendering, then SLC will become an international soccer destination.

blah, blah, blah

Sometimes I think you won't be happy unless you are allowed to design, build, and run the stadium.

I agree. This is one classy-looking drawing. Hopefully they actually use this rendering, it would even beat Bridgeview for the best stadium in MLS.

Sometimes I think you won't be happy unless you are allowed to design, build, and run the stadium.Tried to give you rep for that but it said i have to spread some rep around first!

I know what you mean there... I have argued the point on a number of occassions... I admire his enthusiasm but have given up trying to reason with him...

Sometimes ppl just don't want to be reasoned with...
I am not saying his point of view is not valid, it is as valid as mine or anyone elses. I merely wanted to point out that there are other points of view...

I am happy that the stadium situation is going so well... of course I am very pleased with the location as well, but above all I am just pleased with the fact that we are going to actually get one!

I am not trying to create any kind of animosity either... it is not personal... I hope he will not see it as such!

Any hint at a naming sponsor in that marquis?

Any hint at a naming sponsor in that marquis? The marquis name on the drawing (Grand Real Stadium) appears to be a direct link to the 'Grand America' hotel which is a block away.

The owner of the Grand America hotel also owns the 'Little America Hotel' next to the stadium site, according to news reports, owns 3/4 of the site in question.
It may be that they are working on a sponsorship deal with the owner, or it may just be the artist trying to link the stadium to the area...

I love the look of this and I just hope the actual stadium will look as good as the artists impression!

Sponsorship, eh? What corporations have a large presence in the valley? IIRC Wells Fargo has a decent presence since they bought out First Security a few years back. Who else?

If this plan comes to fruition, the health of MLS is very good. Very, very good.

It値l be nice to get some clarity around the Colorado and MetroStars stadiums this year. And of course, I think most of us on these boards would like to see DCU make some noise officially about stadium plans and locations.

Man, who would have thought that after Columbus there would be another 4 to 6 SSS by 2007?

I have to say, I like what I知 seeing from MLS and its owners over the past couple of years, even with the SJ and KC issues. I知 hoping the quakes and wiz get deals locally, but if they have to move (which I知 against), I知 sure any potential locations will include SSS plans, which can be nothing but good for MLS.

Sinclair Oil - which, the owner of the land and Grand America, either owns or is a large stake holder!

Flying J Oil
Fidelity Investments - more of a Boston Company though.
Huntsman Corp.

That is all I can think of... off the top of my head... anyone else???

Oh Yeah I nearly forgot about America Online...
