Phil Woods. So the guy has Bird's saxophone and Bird's wife, but played some of the most boring solos in the history of jazz. Somehow he managed to play superfast but boring. Not enough "passion" in his music.

Then he went off and played the same solo for Billy Joel and Steely Dan.

Almost all of them. Good grief, what an overused and abused instrument.

Ornette Coleman, unless you're considering alto sax a separate instrument.

Dischordant horn noise never worked for me. Saw him live (opened for the Grateful Dead in Oakland), and wanted to poke my own eyes out.

True. It's not the accordian, is it?

 Ornette overrated?

I saw him at Jazz fest and was blown away. Even my wife loved it and she is not a fan of jazz at all.

I doubt he qualifies as overrated, but Charlie Rouse appears on a number of T. Monk albums and he bugs the crap out of me. I just don't know what Monk heard in his playing that he liked so much -- his tone kills so many recordings for me.

i like charlie rouse. kind of a honker, but he's good in the right group. if you look at his output, he played in quartets a lot.

maybe monk liked him cuz he did what he was told...

i think the key word here was "jazz"...

Kenny G no more plays jazz than cheese is the main ingredient in welsh rarebit. no, wait. that's wrong. anyway, Kenny G is not a jazz saxophonist.
