View Full Version : The Numbers Don't Lie: What's #1 in your iTunes / iPod play count?

I read an article about this a couple of months ago, about someone who considered herself to be a sophisticated professional NYC woman with sophisticated musical tastes but found that her #1 most played song on her iPod was something hideous like Celine Dion. Just scroll all the way to the right on your playlist, and it's probably there, so time to fess up about what your real musical tastes are.

I hadn't looked at it in months, but my answers are:
-- iTunes / desktop: Ted Leo/Pharmacists, "Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone?"
-- iPod: Bruce Springsteen, "Incident On 57th Street"

My most played song is the Turbonegro classic "I Got Erection."

It's closely followed by Ali Hamza's "Bhainchud." (Pronounced 'ban-chode'. Ask an Indian/Pakistani friend what it means - their reaction will be interesting.)

Ted Nugent's "Stranglehold".

Actually, the numbers DO lie.

I skip forward to the end of the songs all the time to check transitions for Mix CDs, so my play count number are very VERY inflated for songs i put on alot of Mix CDs. Especially short ones, or ones that were involved in a particularly important transition.

That said, the one that currently holds the top spot is a 4 second sample of my turntable making some surface noise at the beginning of a record.

With 45 plays.

I jam it in the dock and read it through "iPod Agent", which is software that lets you manage your iPod plus pull songs back off it if you want. I started using that software after MeridianFC posted something here about backing up his iTunes tracks, and I realized that all my music was on the iPod, with very little on my PC. I bought an 80 gig backup, and copied all 40 gigs of the iPod (almost 11K songs) on to it in one fell swoop.

Freaky. #1 on my iPod with 28 plays is "Got Your Money" by Ol' Dirty Bastard.
Rounding out the Top 10 are J5, No Doubt, Pixies, Run DMC, ATCQ, Foo Fighters, Cake, Deltron 3030 and Elvis Costello.

I reset my iTunes playlist recently so it's not that meaningful, but Public Service Announcement/Long Long Long off the Grey Album is #1, followed by Dilated Peoples, Kanye West, Talib Kweli, Aimee Mann, David Bowie and Morcheeba.

My iTunes is always on random. Always. So the results don't mean anything.

That said, there are six songs tied for the top spot:

"Baby's Clean Conscience" - Ugly Casanova (Live)
"Little Bit of Soul" - Kid Loco
"Blue's hte Only Color" - Franklin Bruno
"Bit of Wind" - Fruit Bats
"Ana Ng" - They Might Be Giants
"Hard Life" - Bonnie "Prince" Billy

Red Eyes and Tears, by BRMC

Strangely most of my top 25 are songs that relate in some fashion to my gf. Predictable.

1. Hook - Blues Traveler (I don't know how this got so many plays. I wonder if when other people play it off your list [shared songs in college] it counts.)
2. Hallelujah - Rufus Wainwright (This will be replaced by the Allison Crowe version of the same song - much better.)
3. A Little Less Conversation - Elvis Presley (Mostly because it's so short.)
