More coaches should take a lesson in class from Gansler:
On the apparent handball, Wizards Coach Bob Gansler said: "It's a miscue on our part. We need to play that better. . . . If the referee doesn't call it, then it's not [an infraction]. You have to applaud D.C.'s opportunism."

Goff says in first graph that this was Earnie's last appearance with United. ... adding later in the article that he is indeed going back to the Netherlands.

Maybe that's not news, but it's interesting.

Perhaps the worst kept secret of the past week. I'm going to miss the guy. I don't think we're here if not for him.

Yeah, I just wasn't sure if it had been made "official."

I remember early in 2002, the Stewart thing came up. It was more of a pipe dream at that point and I remember thinking, "yeah right, they'll get Stewart here." Glad I was wrong. I know his time here wasn't the best and he wasn't the cure all he was made out to be, but I'm glad if nothing else that he got a trophy and perhaps more importantly, American fans got to see him play at the club level. That's pretty special for him and for us, I think.

La Barra got a front page Washington Post mention? We've made the bigtime, boys!

In front of their shirtless, painted and howling fan clubs, including the Barra Brava -- loosely translated as "The Crazy Ones" -- United's players erased their four straight losing seasons and raised the championship trophy, returning it to Washington for the first time since 1999.

"One of the best feelings I've ever had was looking around after Dema got kicked off and seeing everyone's face and everyone saying, 'Okay, who cares? It happened and we know what we have to do,' " United defender Mike Petke said.

That's beautiful and that's exactly what separated this team from the DC squads of the last few years-- confidence, determination, and discipline. I think we owe most of that to Nowak, and the rest of it to guys like Stewart and Olsen.

and a ps. for Mike Petke: Hey man, that's what it feels like to be a winner. Welcome aboard.

The United played with the same passion and fury of their first-year taskmaster Peter Nowak

I REALLY hope an editor catches that mistake before the print edition. That's just unexcusable.

Another great quote:

"And now, we're sitting here, it's all worth it. The young guys. The old guys. Every nationality and personality, we got it all. Now we just need to go get some rings, wear that big fat bling-bling around and celebrate. We'll probably get nasty for a couple weeks."

Benny :D
