It's probably been done to death, but deserves a bump and some fresh input!

Maybe making it slightly different, let's categorise, huh? My choices IMHO x 2:

1. Best film ever. The Godfather/Once Upon a Time in America.

2. Best comedy. The life of Brian/Something about Mary.

3. Best musical. West Side Story/Amadeus.

4. Best western. Blazing Saddles/Butch and Sundance.

5. Best war. MASH/The Dirty Dozen.

6. Best horror. The Exhorcist/The Silence of the Lambs.

7. Best slop. It's a Wondferful Life/Shakespeare in Love.

8. Best sci fi. Star Wars/ET.

9. Best cartoon. Jungle Book/The Lion King.

10. Best Action. True Lies/Where Eagles Dare.

I can't do it by genre since all my favorites are from the same genre and I don't like any musicals unless you count Team America.

The Devil's Backbone (El Espinazo del diablo)


I like pretty much everything Cronenberg does as well as Mario Brava and some Dario Argento (though Suspiria was good it was overrated). Cronenberg is probably my favorite though as I like everything he did in the 80's and I hear his late 70's stuff is really good though I've never seen them (the brood, rabid, for example). Maybe Gringo can tell me if The Brood and Rabid were good. People give me grief for liking the Matrix Reloaded so much but I can't help it, the gith scenes were great and it's the best looking movie I've ever seen - pure eye candy. Blade Runner directors cut should have been somewhere in my top ten but I'm not sure where. Also I think M. Knight Shamylan is awesome (never saw the village though, which apparently sucks).

pull the plug on True Lies, put in Raiders I
eliminate the best musical category entirely ( just kidding, no changes )
i like Holy Grail better than LOB, but i wouldnt quibble
i don't think of Blazing Saddles as a western, but as a comedy
i think you are missing historical drama category, like Braveheart ( which appeals mostly to Gibson fans and some Irish )

I had a bit of a dilemna about the categories and was scrabbling at the end - I can't believe I didn't include Cuckoo's Nest somewhere (one of my all time favourites), as was the Shining, Omen, the Jolsen Story, South Pacific, Young Frankenstein, OK Coraal, Dirty Dozen, Soldier Blue, Colour Purple, the Jazz Singer, Harvey, a Day at the Races, Yankee Doodle Dandee, Boys Town, the Untouchables, Goodfellas, Casino, Sound of Music, Clockwork Orange, If, et al et al et al!!!

I see someone else already brought up Blazing Saddles being a comedy. It's as much a western as Spaceballs is sci-fi and Young Frankenstein is horror.

I think the problem I have with these lists in general is that it's easy to mix up ten best with ten personal favourite
The ten best would undoubtedly contain the Godfather, 2001, Citizen Kane, etc. becuase they're epic/groundbreaking/classic [delete as appropriate] but Shakespeare in Love? True Lies?

My top ten (in no particular order and probably the ones I watch the most) has a couple of 'classics' but I'm open to the fact that they're far from 'best'.

Withnail and I
Airplane/Top Secret (I really can't choose between these two and it's close between them and Holy Grail)
The Empire Strikes Back
Highlander
Robocop
The Thing (1982)
Toy Story/ 2 (Again very hard to choose between them)
Bullitt
Casablanca
Goldfinger

And this would probably change week to week. Also, I've only seen it once but The Incredibles is *very* close to dislodging the Toy Story's.

Of course it's bloody subjective - what is the point, if it's not - it's not as if there's a definitive 'best ever', as I would never agree with it, because I have different taste, Jesus wept we all know that don't we???

I'm gonna go ahead and give When Hell Unfreezes props for at least introducing the genre idea. Granted, the thread title was misleading and unfortunate, but the first post is a better start than these threads usually get off to.

I did say IMHO - Coalminer's Daughter was a great movie and I loved Shawshank, despite GT's gaysmack :)

I put Shakespeare in Love in the 'Slop' category (and it did win the Oscar for best film and had 13 nominations), because of the beauty of the spoken word and the twisted portrayal of forbidden love (West Side Story as well) - and True Lies never lost it's pace, it was pulsating from beginning to end - you don't have to dislike it because it's uncool to like anything the governor of California ever did (I understand) - I also liked Terminator!

Now here's a man who knows a good western. I'm astonished how well "Lonesone Dove" has held up. Normally, tv dates horribly. This ranks up there with "Berlin Alexanderplatz" and "Fanny and Alexander" as the greatest made for tv movies ever.
