Some of Ronaldinho's 'elasticos' are ridiculous, Cristiano Ronaldo has had some pretty quality little stepovers, flicks and things, and of course Zidane has done some blinding things - a lot of his stuff isn't so much tricks but just having a ball stuck to his feet and being so much quicker than the defenders.

trapping. i see more guys turn over the ball with a bad trap.
i also love it when someone brings down a ball perfectly for the next touch. it beautiful.

It's a mesmerizing skill. Freakin' hard to execute that move. I've seen Cristiano Ronaldo do it in a real match but I ain't sure which game was it.
For me, the best and most effective skill is the Johan Cruyff turn. If you fake the defender good enough, they might even slip and therefore space is created.

The best skill used in a match -- one that you'll get more mileage from than all the fancy party tricks -- is a progressive first touch. By that I mean that the first touch takes the player away from defensive pressure or into opportunity. That provides the player with time and space to make something terrific happen.

Yep, that's something I really picked up off seeing Cristiano Ronaldo I think. I tend to do a lot of little Cruyff turns anyway (almost as force of habit!) but I've started doing them if I'm going down a wing and can't quite make a cross so I shape up to cross then take it back and hit it in with my other foot.
