Sure that's a good team, but why u-24? It looks like the poster just picked that so he could fit Owen in. I think Brazil would be a top team no matter what the age cut-off.

The person who started the other topic on the forum I was lurking, wasn't English, so I don't think he would have cared much about Owen making the team.

isnt the olimpics the un-official under 23 tourney?

sure you get to pick 3 overage players but still its mainly an under 23 team

argentina seemed to be a step above anyone else in that category

brazil didnt even qualify to the olimpics

probably Argentina right now, with Brazil a very close second. Paraguay also looked quite good in the olympics, but I think they reliance on their overage players, espicially Gamarra and Caroza, would drop them a little further down the list.

I can't believe Owen is only 24...i always think he's much older because he's been playing so long...

i think the olimpic qualifier proved who were the best 2 teams in that category for south america

Good point. I was judging by a somewhat subjective criteria and giving my opinion. However if the teams were to be officially ranked, Paraguay should definitely be second given their qualification and olympics performance.

How could a 24 year old be on an under 24 team?

US under 23 right now looks kinda like this

Countess/Westberg/Cronin
Spector--Gooch--Marshall
Szetela/Clark--Dempsey
-Gaven--------Beasley
-------Donovan
----Johnson--Eski

It'd have to be Argentina. Their young players were positively deadly, all the way through Copa America and the Olympics.

Here's a decent effort from Spain:

GK Iker Casillas
RB Oleguer Presas
LB Asier Del Horno
CB Pablo Ibanez
RM Joaquin Sanchez
LM Vicente Rodriguez
CM Cesc Fabregas
CM Xabi Alonso
CM Xavi Hernandez
CF Jose Antonio Reyes
CF Fernando Torres

Subs: Victor Valdes, Jose Reina, Ander Murillo, Raul Bravo, Alvaro Mejia, Andoni Iraola, Andres Iniesta, Mikel Arteta, Jesus Navas, Sergio Ramos, Sergio Garcia, David Villa.

Defence is a problem obviously. But what an attack. The last 7 names on the list should rightly instil fear into any other u-24 team.

I think that's the way they've always called it, u-23 team means players who are 23 yrs and below are eligible, and so on.

In fact, i remember seeing cases of 22 year olds on u-21 teams.

You left out Owen. As far as I'm concerned, you leaving him out makes the rest of your team void.

That's a pretty good team, but I'd put Iniesta in for Cesc.

Anyway, I think Brazil, with Ronaldinho, Adriano, Kaka, Baptista, Diego, Robinho,... takes the cake.

Brazil would be the best. Our problem in the pre olimpics were our idiot coach and the fact milan didnt release kaka to play:

(3 overage players with a *)

- Dida*

- Maicon, Luizão, Edu Dracena, Maxwell

- Rochemback, Julio Baptista, Kaka, Ronaldinho*

- Ronaldo*, Adriano

(with no overage players)

- Gomes

- Maicon, Luizão, Edu Dracena, Maxwell

- Rochemback, Julio Baptista, Kaka, Diego

- Robinho, Adriano

Isn't PSV's Alex young enough for this setup?

He's not eligible. He is a u-25 since his 25th birthday is in this calender year. And there is no such thing as a U-24. The last age group is U-23 which means they cannot be older than 23 at any point this calender year.

Italy's U-21 teams are always winning in Europe...A Italy Team I would put would be:

Pelizzoli
Zaccardo-Chiellini-Bovo-Barzagli

D'Agostino-De Rossi-Donadel

Miccoli-Gilardino-Cassano
