MLS
Does Canada have the money, inclination to go after MLS franchise? (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Soccer/2004/10/28/689902-cp.html) This is a pretty good article. And they do seem to have solved MLS's "Soldilocks problem" with regard to stadium size.
I tend to think investors would be interested in the concept, if (and it's a medium-sized if) the terms on the part of the Argos and York U. are reasonable (even if they're interested in cahrging rent, as long as the rent is reasonable, and as long as they're willing to part with a solid share of ancillaries, this could still be a pretty good economic deal for MLS).

Err, Goldilocks, I meant. But that could be called a somewhat Freudian slip.

No, there just has to be agreement bewteen the federations. Nobody with MLS has ever indicated that FIFA would have a problem with this. But if you ask me, a Canadian team in the league is probably a conecpt whose time has come and gone. This was a big deal a couple of years ago, right after contraction when MLS has searching for investors. In thoise days, an investor who talked about joining the league was a big deal, it didn't matter what country it was in. But it's becoming obvious that there will be quite a bit of competition for the next two expansion slots--Seattle, Rochester, San Antonio, Houston, etc. I just don't see a way that Toronto is going to look better than the other candidates. Of course, like everyone else I never saw Salt Lake coming, but it just seems like the next 2 or 4 expansion teams will be in the US.

Why not? Everyone else except for Rochester on the short list has to wait for their SSS. Toronto already has that part solved. IMO, Toronto and Rochester could easily get the next two because they have new SSS in the works, assuming all other considerations are equal, like ownership. Plus, Canada has a National Team to help them sell their season tickets. You gotta know Canada would schedule at least one CMNT game there per year, organized through the MLS front office, with first chance tickets going to season ticket holders, double headers, etc. Toronto could easily become a soccer hot bed.

There's stadiums all over the place that would be great for MLS. Heck, Hartford has a great one. So does Miami. OKC had the stadium issue all figured out. But the real key to getting a MLS team is to have an investor. If one comes forward in Toronto, then they'll go to the head of the list. I don't doubt that Toronto (or any other city) could become a "soccer hot bed" in the right circumstances. But is it now? No.

I like how DC United'd Gomez knows that MLS is a good professional league because "the checks arrive on time."
An older pro always knows the value of that little detail.

Gomez has played for Nueva Chicago and Arsenal de Sarandi in Argentina. That's the thing about "real" soccer nations. They don't use derivative club names.

a downtown stadium in toronto would be well received I believe. I am moving there in october of next year (marrying a canuck), anyway, no one in the city even knows that the Lynx exist. They play way out in the suburbs, I went to a match this year..It wasn't too bad. Anyway, the point is Toronto is one of the major media markets in North America, there are New York, Chicago, LA, Mexico City and Toronto are the top 5..Now that we have 'Mexican teams' in MLS (seemingly almost 2 or 3 more are interested in placing a franchise in the states), we'd have a much more broader exposure by getting a team in canada...It's all about revenue, and I think they're looking to secure more TV contracts in Canada and Mexico. but that's just a guess. Long-term it could be a viable money maker. In about 20 years we should have a really good league, right now you have to stick with 50% of the games that are awful, but that's alright, becuase it's soccer and if you bitch about the standard then you're a baby. People in finland don't bitch about the standard of their 'football', so why should we?
