Pinched from another site:
Questions...
1) Do you think Chelsea sacked mutu purely to save the cash he would have cost in wages?
2) do you feel it was 'out of order'? were they within their rights?
3) do you feel they had an obligation to help rehaibili-wotsit him, or... do you feel each case [ie, any future cases] should be judged in isolation? will you now prefer that ANY player, no matter the circumstances, should receive the same harsh treatment?
Answers....
1) I think they sacked Mutu because he was a disruptive influence with psychological "issues" and because his performances hadn't been good for quite some time.
2) I think they were within their rights to sack him - he was clearly in breach of his contract.
3) I don't think they had an obligation (per se) to help him. I personally would prefer that they tried to help him but I don't think they are obligated to do so.
In response to your other point in the third question: I think Chelsea have been very, very foolish in dressing this issue in the garb of "morality" when it is clearly first and foremost about achieving success and about doing away with any and all obstacles to this success. By adopting a "zero tolerance" policy as a matter of inflexible principle they lay themselves open to future problems. Say Lampard makes a grave error of judgment after he's had one drink too many or someone spikes Terry's cola. The club then has no option but to sack the players or to retain them and look like self-serving hypocrites in the process. In short, I think the club would do far better to treat the issue on a case by case basis rather than a matter of principle.

I think there's an easy way out of that one - this is not surprising from Mutu, and is somewhat expected. He's told off his coach, etc. This is the final straw, so to speak. You could definitely justify that.

In a way this was done on a 'case by case' basis if you think about it.
Mourinho wanted rid of Mutu, regardless of whats said by anyone at the club, he provided the avenue of pursuit for the manager who took it.
He was selected for a reason.
A warning to all the other players as well.
No wonder Gallas is keeping his mouth shut this season about 'playing out of position'.
Great things are going to happen to this club this season and he wants to be part of it too.One slip up and he knows he's on his bike as far as this manager is concerned.

He was selected for a reason.
the was targeted from day one........
Mourinho continued to reveal that he had major concerns over Mutu's private life since the moment he arrived at Stamford Bridge and that he even challenged the forward on the first day of training in pre-season.
''When I met Mutu on his first day in pre-season, he was with his agents, Mr Becali and Mr Popescu. I told them 'I have information you are on cocaine','' continued Mourinho.
''All three laughed and denied it. They said it was all a big lie and maybe there are lies about him because last season he behaved strangely at the club and in his social life.
''After that, I didn't speak with him again because they denied the situation.
''But for a long time, we felt now and again he was behaving strangely. Sometimes he was happy, sometimes not so.
''Sometimes he was involved with the group, sometimes isolated.
''He arrived late a few times and other times didn't come in at all. He was also injured when nobody knows when and how.
''These were strange things. We spoke about it at the club.
''Was he pushing us to let him go in the transfer window? Did he want to start a conflict and go to another place? Or is he involved in other things? Questions were starting to be asked.''

He won't wreck the team. He'll just play great for 8 games and then disappear and snort coke.

Doesn’t really surprise me, Arsenal has always been a haven for compulsive gamblers, alcoholics, drug addicts, pedophiles and ne’er do wells. :D

now mutu's talking to the press saying his career is over, life ruined e.t.c......he must have never heard the expression "if you cant do the time, dont do the crime.".i mean what did he expect the club to do ehh??,.......oh right just stop paying him and forget it ever happened!!!
"Now my career is in ruins. I might as well walk away from football," Mutu told the Sunday Mirror. "What is there left for me?
"Chelsea have destroyed me. I don't know what I'm going to do. I am shocked and surprised by their decision.
"I didn't expect them to pay me while I was suspended, but I never thought they would sack me either."
Mutu is upset with Chelsea's timing of their decision, as the club opted not to wait for The FA's ruling on his positive drugs test.
"It is unfair. If they are going to sack me, they should have done it afterwards," he added.
"Why did they go public? To make an example of me? It makes it very difficult for me now."

Well, I would have liked tohave seen a bit of compassion here from the club, we all make mistakes. However as others have pointed out we probably would have been hearing from Bosnich's lawyers.
However Mutu is totaly out of order with this outburst, there is only one person responsible for ending his career, if indeed it is over Arsenal may be interested, and that is himself. If he did not take the drugs in the first place Chelsea could not have sacked him.
Jose is a hard man, he gave Mutu the chance to come clean at the start of the season, he ignored the offer and paid the price.
I think if he had confessed privately and cleaned up his act all would be now well. His sudden lack of form last season does not seem so strange now.
In some ways Chelsea have now made a rod for their own backs I just hope everyone else at the club is clean.
If they are not they would be well advised to have a quiet word with Jose and sort themselves out.

Agreed. Even the president of the US has been to known to snort a little charlie. Zero tolerance is a little harsh in my opinion. But Mutu knew from Jose’s rules that Chelsea was a zero tolerance club. Mutu knew the score.
Junkie players who have got off lightly in the past include the paki-bashing Lee Bowyer. Also, I think that racial attacks, like the Bowyer-Woodgate incident are far more serious than drugs and drug taking.
Anyways, it is done as far as Chelsea are concerned. Mutu should get his act together now.

Arsenal have more chance of getting a penalty at Old Trafford with Mike Riley in charge than Adrian Mutu has of escaping an 8 month ban.

7 month ban for Mutu. His suspension will conclude on May 18 - meaning he will not return to action before next season at the earliest.
£20,000 fine.
