is this movie based on a true story?? Also, did Jackie McQuillan exist, or is he based on a player but with his name changed? Sorry, I'm not too familiar with Celtic football but I enjoyed the movie alot and would love to know this stuff.

I've not actually seen the movie, and I'm guessing I'm not the only one, as its cinema distribution in the UK appears to have been scarcer than a Welshman who has never shagged a sheep.
It's entirely fictional as far as I'm aware. However, if it's about giant-killing Cup exploits, perhaps this was the inspiration...

:D What do you expect from Robert Duvall?
There was a documentary about Jimmy Johnstone on tonight and I caught a bit, they were interviewing Duvall and hearing him saying "wee Jimmy Johnstone" was one of the funniest things I've heard.
Wasn't John McVeigh (ex- Raith Rovers and Albion Rovers manager) involved, was he the manager? He's a tosser.

It was not based on a true story and certainly not Dundee winning the League Cup.
The team in the film is a non-league team, Kilknockie or something like that, who win the Scottish Cup. Incidentally, the only team to have won the Scottish Cup from outside the top league is East Fife;)

Queen's Park won the Scottish Cup in 1893 whilst still a non-league side :p

Are you joking? Queens Park had won the Scottish Cup a few times before '93, weren't they a league team fo those ones? They were formed years before that too, what laegue did they play in at that time?
p.s. You better tell all the football historians because most seem to back me up:rolleyes:

You really should check things out first, Gordon...

By 1890 the Scottish Football league was formed, but despite being invited to join, Queen's Park resisted this new league set-up. Remaining true to their amateur ethics, they staunchly repelled the new 'professionalism' creeping into the sport and rejected joining a league that would ultimately involve professional clubs.
Queen's Park remained outside the Scottish Football league for several years... The lure of regular weekly fixtures was too hard to refuse; the club eventually entered the league in 1900.
Queen's Park's pre-1893 Cup final appearances came when there was no football league for them to have joined, ergo it would be a bit trite of anyone to claim that Queens (as well as Vale of Leven, Dumbarton, Renton, Hibernian and Third Lanark) won the Scottish Cup "from outside the top league" seeing as there was no top league then.
They didn't join the Scottish league until 1900, so their 1893 Scottish Cup victory was most definitely with them "outside the top league"...

Not only do you see McCoist in Celtic colours, you see Didier Agathe in Rangers colours lifting the Scottish Cup! Suppose he still played for Raith Rovers at the time

Good film! Gotta love the fly fishing/goal keeping analogy that helps the American keeper save the PK. Good photography in the movie, too. I would reccommend it. Also, I don't think the fictional Kilnockie FC is supposed to be non-leauge-- I think the premise is that they're 2nd division, but I'm not sure...
