In all the other countries the big clubs dominate but it France the 2 traditionallly biggest clubs OM and PSG do not dominate. PSG havent won since 94 and Marseille since 93. Imagine if Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayren Munich, Milan, Juventus, Inter, Manchester Uninted hadn't won a title in over 10 years. Thats inconceivable. Marseille and PSG's mismanagement has allowed Lyon to sneak it and take their spot.
PSG is not traditionally the biggest club of France along with Marseille. PSG won the championnat only 2 times (86 and 94) while real big clubs like Juventus, Real have won almost 30 championship titles. St-Etienne and Marseille are the most titled clubs (10) and then there's Nantes (8), Monaco (7) and plenty of others ...
In fact in France, there's no club that has constantly ruled the championnat over the decades. For example, the european history of Marseille represents almost nothing before 1987, and St-Etienne's golden years didn't last long ...

St. Etienne's Golden years didn't last long? Boy, that is relative.... Don't they have 10 or so championships?

Traditionally big, no.
In terms of support, then yes.
PSG, Marseille and Lyon would have to be the three best supported teams in France.
Also, St-Etienne win the title from 67 to 70 and then again from 74 to 76. Their last title win was back in 1981.
They also won the cup in 62, 68, 70, 74, 75 and 77.
So pretty much the 1970's was their decade much like Liverpool rules the 70's and 80's in England.
Marseille ruled then ruled the early 90's, PSG the mid 90's and then Lyon the early millenium as it were.

That's right, all their titles were gained in 20 years, and since, nothing. It's still one of the biggest club in french football but they've not dominated France as much as Real and Barca for Spain, Juventus and Milan for Italy.

good times or bad times to be an OL supporter? le guen's gone, and lots of talk about other departures.
but there are also names being announced as potential recruits that a couple of years ago would have been pure utopia. and JMA speaking to the G14, and everybody listening very attentively.
just how close has OL come to arriving in the small circle of europe's biggest clubs?

I don't understand... Aren't Lyon already a G-14 club?
Anyways... Everybody in Europe knows Lyon, so they are in the small circle of Europe's biggest. You don't win 4 straight domestic titles in any league without getting noticed, and their European presence has certainly been felt as well.

I'm looking forward to the Marseille match this Sat. Always a match to look forward to even though Marseille are way behind Lyon in the standings. These 2 teams and their fans hate each other. Should be a great enviorment at the match.

Govou to Spain ?
http://news.maxifoot.com/20050519/news2005-05-19_36502.php
Lyon: Govou in Liga? (19/05)
Only Lyonese officially authorized to leave Lyon this summer, Sidney Govou would not interest only English clubs. Its end of top-of-the-range season attracted the eye of the Spanish recruiters and several large teams study her possible recruitment thus. Valence, Real Madrid, but also Atletico Madrid is interested by the profile of the right medium, whose starting clause should oscillate between 10 and 15 million euros according to the number of offers arriving to Jean-Michel Aulas. Govou recently indicated that it would not leave the OL at all costs, only if it had the advisability of crossing an additional stage. (By Nicolas Perched)

Discussion with JM Aulas from http://olweb.fr
Discussion with President Jean-Michel Aulas
Suspense always remains but the light now is foreseen. Then which will come between the Rhone and the Saone to reinforce the club? Is Reynald Denoueix the favourites for the post of trainer? David Trezeguet the French international attacker of Juve? Jon Dahl Tomasson the Danish international Milanese? Luis Figo galactic international Portuguese? Does the club prepare a gros coup'? And departures, which are the players likely to leave. and to remain? Everyone raises these questions, here the answers.
Succession of Paul Guen
Research occurs well. There is the chance to have a club structured well with a group of the players among best. You have also a certain number of economic capacities which enable you to discuss with trainers projects recruitment and consolidation. That can only well occur.
Reynald Denoueix
Favourites? It is necessary to be wary of the favourites since there is three years that had not occurred like had imagined it the press. I was likely to meet a certain number of trainers, all of qualities. The choice is thus difficult because each one brings its references or its dynamism, its youth or its competences. A choice will have to be made. I will do it very soon with Jerome Seydoux who also met 2 of the trainers who arrive in short list'. The choice will intervene at any beginning of week because I wish to announce to the players on holiday before their departure, which was selected.
Currently, there is a podium with 3 names which are distinguished compared to the others.
Indices on the trainer?
They speak at least the French language... One deals with press very specialist with his information thus I think that it is necessary to remain in what was imagined with surprises in the order what will be able to leave.
It is necessary to negotiate even if if today it is easier to make come des' trainers since Yves (Colleu) is unfortunately to also replace. It was a great moment of happiness to work with him, with Paul (Guen) too. They brought much and I hope that we also, brought to them a little in their experiments. As at least 2 trainers should be replaced, it is more complicated. It is necessary négocier.et to thus do many things in very little time it can arrive, not that there is intox, but that one gives information which makes it possible to widen the field to enable us to work there or one did not await us.
One will tighten the list during the weekend and the decision will be made Monday or Tuesday.
Trezeguet, and if it were Lyon (France Football)
Personally I will like much to see Trezeguet in Lyon but unfortunately there never was contact from this point of view there. The only time where I saw it it is when it came to be made operate on Lyon by the specialist Gilles Walsch. I never evoked with him of a future in Lyon thus I am astonished. Then if the desire has to him for coming and does not dare to telephone to me, it is good sign. Thus give him my telephone number. Lastly, yesterday I was in Lisbon with the presidents of Juventus and they did not evoke this subject at all there. I do not think that that is in the plans of Juventus nor in those of David Trezeguet except if the things are taken upstream, which I do not know today.
Jon Dahl Tomasson?
It is a player who interests us for a long time. One had tried to make it come a few times ago. It now will play a final of League Champions. I wish him to play it and gain it. Maintaining its future within Milan AC can be different. I find premature statement all the same that it can come to Lyon, but it is not completely idiotic of saying that it interests us, but there are many others of it.
Luis Figo?
One made a request on this side which did not end for the moment. One got information because it is considered that if one had to supplement the right side of the team it is one of the players who interests us. One saw it playing the year spent to Portugal and in the same way as one followed Thomasson since a good moment, it is one of the players whom one follows. That does not want to say all the same that it will come. One had followed Didier Drogba before it does not sign in Chelsea. The life is made players whom one follows and whom one does not make.
Its age? And if it is young it does not have experience. there are always a positive thing and another worrying in the prize list or the experiment of the players.
A large blow?
The budget does not enable us to do anything and not only for financial reasons. One showed in the past that one could select about well the players who could reinforce the group without putting it in difficulty. The OL will announce largely profit results this year but maintaining all depends on what one can call large coup' un. It is not the financial capacity of the Olympic Lyonese who determines the size of the operations that we have to make but especially the will to fit in a progression and it is there that is the difficulty.
It is necessary to let to us work with confidence. It was said that the next year one would aim at a fifth title of Champion but also a place in the last square, if possible in the two last, League Champions. That must sufficiently be crédibilisé by what one did in the past so that one needs to add some on our capacity to invest or not to let leave the players.
Departures?
It was announced that no player would leave. It was said and the press évertue to give names or information as what some could leave. or statement which a player could be free at the end of three years. These infos is completely false and aberrant. Look at the case Mexes, it is the only player to have to try this operation. Yesterday I was with the leaders of Roma who said to me that that was probably going them to cost 16 or 17 million euros the last news.
It is necessary to stop giving this information which creates problems in the group. Some times the badly informed or badly advised players believe what the specialized newspapers write, which is completely false. One not only wishes to keep all our players. Sidney (Govou) has the possibility of leaving but if there remain us will be very happy and my small finger says to me that he is not insensitive with the ambition of the Olympic Lyonese.
It was also announced that one would be reinforced with 2 or 3 players in the event of departure of Sidney. I should be believed until I would be contradicted and this day there you will be able to come to see me so that I give you explanations.

I'm the only American OL fan that I know of, but I can only watch them during the CL, thanks to Canal+. Some of our Canadian friends follow them, I think. I guess I can translate the match reports on the website, but they'd be a bit rough.

it's not just the 4th title...
OL is also leading the fair play competition, with only 53 yellows and 1 red card this season. consider that against OM saturday, OL only had 4 fouls called against them!
The reserve team is leading their league (CFA) and is in the finals of the Coupe Gambardella.
the U17 team is in the final national tournament, which they won last year. the U15 team is in 2nd in their league, 2 points behind ASSE, and the
U13 boys are 8 points clear, with a victory in a big tournament in belgium earlier this month.
The OL women's teams have done well too: the A team reached the finals of the Challenge de France (women's coupe de france) only to lose in a penalty shootout. the B team is in 2nd place in their national league, the C team is in the finals of the regional cup and 11 points clear in their league. the U-16 girl's team won both their league and 1 cup already, and is in the finals for another.

I think Bergougnoux should be loaned out instead of Nilmar.
guignol
27 May 2005, 05:25 AM
1) that doesn't open up a extraEC spot.
2) bergougnoux is bigger, more mature, and can do more things
3) nilmar needs a season of everyday L1 experience, and if OL gets the n°9 they're after he can't get it at lyon.
does nilmar still figure big in OL's future? i hope and believe so. he's only turned 20, after all!
