marseille [...] lacked strength in midfield to maintain good possession and take control of the game. It was instead lyon who controlled the game... if so that's good news! after the woeful performance in midfield against strasbourg i was afraid we were in for a long season.

Its funny how he would rather play for a mid-table team in the Premiership, rather then Lyon or Monaco who a two championsleague teams, and have good chances on being in the Champions league next year aswell. Meh its his loss.

If Baros wont even come how the hell do they expect to get Owen. I dont know who else is out there that they can get who actually wants to come. Playing for any old team in the EPL is more important to players than playing for one of the top French teams. That is the sad reality of it all. I blame the English media for this. They make it seems like if you dont play in the EPL then you haven't made it. I saw a soccer magazine on the newstand a few months ago. I'm sure it was published in England. It had 3 players on the cover(Essien, Joaquin, and Fernando Torres I think) The headline was 'Are these the next stars of the Premiership ?" I was very insulted and pissed off when I saw that. 3 guys who are under contract with other clubs already and the English media/press is saying they are gonna come to the Premiership soon. Its bad for the clubs they are on and their fans. That is BS. They shouldnt be allowed to do that. I hate England. I'm looking forward to them failing at the World Cup next year.

lol that was Four Four Two's may or june edition i think. I actually have that issue. In all seriousness though, it is an excellent magazine and the feature on those players had nothing to do with a supposed media bias towards england. The reason why they profiled those three is because all three were rumored (not just by the english press, but by everyone) to move to the premiership. Essien to Chelski because of the club's expressed interest in the players, and because they are buying up all the hot young talent; Joaquin to Chelsea, although he stated he wanted a move to Real; and Torres to liverpool because he actually wants to play in england.
in any case, there's nothing wrong with speculation, it's been happening forever- and besides, they weren't saying that they were coming, remember, the title was "ARE these the...."

In the case of Baros, i doubt its because of reputation. Its probably that Villa is offering him a larger contract than Lyon is.

I'm pretty sure Lyon have more money than Aston Villa. Its because he wants to stay in the EPL because its the best league. I bet his agent told him not to go to the French league because it wouldnt be the best for his career.

"Best League"? In terms of money only.

actually this may be a sign that lyon has set the money aside for another foward... maybe one who plays for real madrid... ;)

well it was certainly good for essien's career.
I don't think anybody, agents or players, is deluding themselves thinking that playing at aston villa is better and more reputable than lyon. So i would agree with looper-the EPL as a whole has a crapload of money invested in it. Players want to play in england because it is lucrative. The whole league structure lets clubs dish out bags of money and still keep afloat. With french clubs, its different. With taxes, and lower revenue even a sucessful club like lyon needs to keep the checkbook in mind. Aulas runs a pretty steady ship, and he's not going to give a player more money than he's worth. Aston Villa, however, might.

I honestly don't know but you could ask on
OL's official forum, in its "international" section:
http://olweb.fr/forum/viewforum.php?f=13&sid=f0a1564d9994c310a42c68bbb4646e29

Never know, you may find fellow OL supporters
in your area of the world.

I dont know how happy Sven Goran Eriksson would be about him playing in France. Not too happy I'd imagine. I dont see how they can convince him to come. Houllier is the only thing that could convice him. I'm sure Owen's agent is telling him to hold out for a firm from an English team.
