If Aulas tells everybody that Carew is this "great striker" he announced, this is quite a bitter deception ...

John Carew ??? When they go against the big boys in the Champions League and they throw out a Carew-Wiltord strike tandem thats gonna look pretty weak.

It all depends what Carew arrives in Lyon, if it is the one from Valencia a few years back then, this could be good. If it is the more recent incarnation, not a good thing.

Carew has been pretty decent for the NT, so I would say he's back to his finest Valencia-form.

I think all ya'll are dumb. :D
Carew is class. He's going to give them an ariel game they have lacked the past few years. He's surprisingly fast for a 6'5 player, and he has good skill with his feet (great fist touch). He will score a ton of goals next year..... You can qoute me on that. And a bargain, at 7.5 million Euro's or so, that is near free for such and experienced and talented 26 year old. Excellent signing, I'm confident that Aulas knows more than you fools! :D

This signing proves that no players who play in the top 4 leagues want to come play in France. Both Baros and Thomasson who either I'd rather have than Carew, both turned Lyon down.

wiltord - carew weak? we'll see. if it's last year's wiltord and the carew of a few years ago, it will be awesome. i saw him a couple of times for norway and valencia where he just blew me away. he's only 25, so he could get that form back, especially with a good team around him. there's no guarantee, but at 7.5M€ it won't be the end of the world if he's only so-so. it's not like OL won't have anything going up front without him, they were best attack in the CL last year even going out in quarterfinals!

like sl7vk, i'm inclined to give aulas and lacombe the benefit of the doubt. find me another staff that's done as well on the transfer market in the past 5 years!

I respectfully disagree. Baros is the worst finisher I have seen in some time, and Thomasson, lacks pace, and a good first touch.

Press conference: details

It was more than 11:00 pm, in front of a score of journalists, cameras or photographers, that associated Jean-Michel Aulas, Gerard Houllier and his two assistants, Patrice Bergues and Remi Garde confirmed that the new point of Lyons attack would be John Carew. Without the player, gone very lately from Istanbul, but which will be present tomorrow morning at the training.

OL's president confirmed that the negotiations had been rough: "John already came last week, it was there yesterday, then Bernard Lacombe, Marino Faccioli, the player, and its agents, are gone back to Istanbul to finalize the discussions. That lasted all the day, until 21h, where it could finally get into the plane, contract signed out of pocket. It was one of the priorities of the club, it for a very long time is followed, and Gerard too. The objective was to reinforce the group, it will do it with its qualities of power and speed. It moreover it at 25 years, a very great experiment, 46 selections, 66 European matches"

http://olweb.fr/images/photo/2005/26/5680.jpg According to its new trainer, Jonh Carew should bring new solutions attacks some "without obviously disparaging what had been made before. But in the European context, its physical impact can make the difference. I had tried to make it come to Liverpool at the time of Valence, which is funny it is that Lyon also, and that one speaks about it together today. Its role of pivot can allow players like Sylvain Wiltord, Sidney Govou, Nilmar or Pierre Alain Frau to have other occasions. I am not anxious for his adaptation, he comes early, speak perfectly quite English, and Anthony Réveillère played with him in Valence. "

Then Lyons President gave a progress report on the remainder of recruitment :
- Jérémy Toulalan: "We made a proposal in Nantes, it did not have success. He wants to come, and the offer could make it possible in Nantes to remake surface. It is to be taken or leave "
- Marouane Chamakh: "We made of John our priority. We will wait, it is still early during the time of recruitment. It wants to also come "
- Bryan Bergougnoux: "It had emitted wishes as for its time of play. It was today in Toulouse to meet Erick Mombaerts, and Olivier Sadran. We await for news, I did not have this evening of it "
- Michael Essien: "I did not receive offers of Chelsea, can be somebody of different with the club. But my position remains the same one, except offers out of conceivable, Michael will be Lyonnais the next season. He will be besides tomorrow on training, before being released until July 5, since he played in selection until June 19, like Mahamadou Diarra. Juninho, is not to him yet on leave, he will only begin later "
- - Sidney Govou: "I saw it Friday at Anthony Réveillère's wedding, it will be there tomorrow at the first training. He does not exclude to remain, as we"

Lastly, it was the hour of the presentations with Patrice Bergues, assistant of Gerard Houllier, who confirmed his great pride to be in this club "which gained as much these last years, which holds the top of the poster in France and Europe. I am as glad to find the ground, I am in a hurry as that starts again! I also make a point of greeting Yves and Paul, to pass behind them, it is a pledge of safety when the men are known. They are people of quality, I make a point of paying homage to their work "

Agree 100%. Baros is very one-dimensional. He works hard, but I have never been impressed with his skills.

Thomasson is a good finisher, but nothing else.

I'm not that impressed with the recruitment so far. I thought Pedretti had a mediocre season last year. They really dont need Toulalan. I'm sorry to see Bergougnoux go. Carew is not a large international striker. Its not like Norway is good team anyway. They should have persued the Pires track harder.

Carew is not a large international striker. Its not like Norway is good team anyway. They should have persued the Pires track harder.it would have been tough to have an impressive recruitment, they're pretty near the top of the pack in talent already, and on their budget... ONE big player like trezeguet or torres might have been seen as the cherry on top of the cake, but image more than money foiled lyon there. the main thing was keeping the players they had, and so far, so good.

pedretti did have a mediocre season at marseilles, but the only one in his career. there's every chance of him being better at lyon.

toulalan would be a great signing, he was best young player in L1 last year.

monsoreau also a good take, a team needs 3 center backs. in the past cacapa's injuries have forced abidal, essien, even malouda to fill in at back.

sorry to see bergougnoux go? me too. hopefully it will be a loan.

pires? as a backup to malouda, but at what salary? if he had known that arsenal wasn't going to extend at isosalary, he might have come.

carew? a little riskier than pedretti for form, but he's only 25, and the carew of a few years ago looked like he was going to set the world on its ear. if he had been with us in eindhoven, van bommel and alex would have ended up in hospital instead of CL semis!

the first big pang of nostalgia... the annual summer camp in tignes always started with a bicycle race, which was always won hands down by... paul le guen.

something houllier and his heart are obviously not going to do!
