Two days ahead of Tuesday evening's Champions League showdown against Juventus in Turin, the injury crisis affecting Bayern's forward line has shown some signs of easing. Both Vahid Hashemian and Zé Roberto are poised to return to the Bavarians' squad, although Claudio Pizarro is still sidelined with injury.

Hashemian shook off an ankle problem to resume training on Sunday morning. "He's coming with us to Turin," coach Felix Magath told a media conference after the session. The Iran hitman is a very real possibility for a start alongside Roy Makaay.

Claudio Pizarro will not be fit in time for the trip to the Serie A leaders. "I don't believe he'll make it, and even if he's on the plane, there has to be a huge question-mark over his ability to play," the boss reported.

The Peru striker has been laid low by a back problem for almost two weeks now. The injury forced the player to break off a fitness test on Sunday morning. "It's definitely improving," he told fcbayern.de, but he ruled himself out of contention for Turin. "I won't be fit in time," he confirmed.

Both Pizarro and Hashemian missed Saturday's 1-0 home defeat by Schalke. If the Iranian fails to recover completely in time for the Champions League Group C encounter, Magath will again be forced to field Makaay as a lone striker, as Roque Santa Cruz and Alex Zickler are both still unfit.

On a positive note, Zé Roberto returns to the team in midweek. Magath ordered the Brazilian to rest on Saturday after his marathon journey on international duty, but the winger took part in Sunday's workout and is a certain starter on Tuesday.

Basically today sucked for my boy Hashemian. He only got 10 minutes of play time at the end of the second half, much too late and too little time to do anything really. Bayern lost 1-0 to Juve and thus we lost the potential 1 point that we were really looking for.

Magath shoulda put in Hashemian in perhaps half way through the match or not at all.

My 2 cents.

Bayern's coach is an idiot, he had said vahid would start then he decided to play only 1 striker in front, it was obvious that he went to turin looking for a tie and thats when a team loses. During the last 10 min when vahid came in he was their best player, the moron should have started with 2 strikers vahid along with makkay I hope he gets fired like top muller in hamburg that'll teach em not to bench our players :p Im starting to wonder if vahid moving to bayern was a good move, he would have probably been again one of the 3 top goal scorers in the bundesliga right now if he was still with VFL bochum.

Ballack and Pizarro doubtful for Rostock clash , and this means that Vahid will get a chance to start :)

Forty-eight hours ahead of Bayern's Bundesliga trip to Hansa Rostock the Reds continue to be plagued by injuries to key attackers. Sebastian Deisler is out of contention with the reappearance of a few minor symptoms of depression, Claudio Pizarro is still struggling with back pain and now playmaker Michael Ballack is rated doubtful.

The 28 year-old picked up a heavy blow to his left ankle in Tuesday's Champions League meeting with Juventus. The Germany captain sat out Thursday training and reported for treatment instead.

"I'm still hopeful Ballack could play," Bayern coach Felix Magath told reporters on Thursday, although no decision would be taken regarding the influential midfielder until final training on Friday.

The situation with regard to Peru captain Pizarro gave far fewer grounds for optimism. "He won't make it," Magath reported. The player's back troubles had receded to a great extent, but he was unable to play any role in the day's workout. Both Roque Santa Cruz and Alexander Zickler are definitely out as they continue with rehab programmes after serious injury.

At least one option has opened up for the boss with the news that Vahid Hashemian is available for selection. "He's totally fit again," Magath announced, hinting at a role for the Iran hitman alongside Roy Makaay: "We won't normally play with a lone striker," the 51 year-old confirmed. Injuries were the only reason the Bavarian giants had recently been forced to operate with a 4-5-1 formation.

A welcome return to squad duty looks on the cards for veteran Mehmet Scholl. The midfielder has shaken off a string of muscle-related problems and completed a full week of training.

Reserve striker Jose Paolo Guerrero could also profit from the malaise affecting the forward line. Pizarro's fellow countryman, recently capped for the first time at full international level, trained with the first team on Thursday. "Let's wait and see," Magath said, although he warned the youthful talent he needed to raise his game compared to a string of average displays of late.

"He's young but he's not much further than the fringe at the moment. He wasn't much help to the reserves in Regensburg last weekend. If he wants to make the senior squad he'll have to play brilliantly in the third division," the boss declared.

Another chance for Hashemian to start tomorrow...

No better place for Vahid to open account

Summer signing Vahid Hashemian must be despairing of ever finding the net again. The ex-Bochum forward has yet to hit the target for his new club in 227 Bundesliga minutes, a full DFB Cup game in the 6-0 victory over Völpke and 21 goalless Champions League minutes.

The Iran international is keeping a level head despite the difficult situation. "That's football. I have to carry on training hard, battle, and see what happens," the 28 year-old told Friday's news conference at the Säbener Strasse.

Despite some intense and leading questioning from reporters, the striker remained friendly and relaxed. "I'm honestly not disappointed," he said, repeating like a mantra: "That's football." He rejected comparisons with Bayern's previous Iran star Ali Daei, who departed for Hertha Berlin in summer 1999 after just one season in Munich. "But I'm not Ali Daei, that was a completely different situation."

Vahid insisted he was not downhearted at the fact reserve striker Paulo Guerrero has been the striking substitute of choice recently. "I need to be looking at myself and battling away," he declared. He had always known it would be tough claiming a place in Munich, "and it's got even more difficult because the others are all on good form."

However, the player nicknamed "Helicopter" may well get a chance in Bayern's upcoming match, and could even be in line for a start. The Reds travel to Hashemian's former club VfL Bochum where he scored 16 goals last term. "I have plenty of happy memories of Bochum," the player confirmed.

With Claudio Pizarro doubtful, coach Felix Magath dropped a strong hint the number nine could make an appearance. "Players who come up against their former clubs are often highly motivated," the boss remarked, "and I'm hoping Vahid is in good shape for Bochum. He can count on some sort of appearance."

It would not be the first time in the topsy-turvy world of football that a player returned to a former stamping ground and struck his first goal for a new employer. Likeable Vahid's first comment would surely be: "That's football."

Hashemian set to stay and fight for place

Vahid Hashemian announced his arrival at Bayern last summer with a bang, firing four goals in 20 minutes on his debut, albeit against village outfit FC Rottach in a pre-season friendly. However, the player nicknamed 'Helicopter' looked increasingly grounded as the season progressed.

"Pathetic Daei"? You're a disgrace. After all he has done for our country, you use the adjective 'pathetic' to describe him?

I havnt discredited him, he currently performs in par with 'pathetic' and thus he will be named so (my opinion). He is huge, and nothing I can say or do can take anything away from his legendary status. The longer he hangs around the less people will remember him as the stealthy forward that he once was.
