Ferguson's Maccabi mix-up (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/2265863.stm)

Defeats by Bolton and Leeds, problems up front, problems in the middle - and now Sir Alex Ferguson can't even remember which team his Manchester
United side are playing. Fergie was left red-faced in a news conference ahead of Wednesday's
Champions League tie when he confused United's opponents, Maccabi Haifa, with their arch-rivals.

"We've watched their videos," began Ferguson confidently. "Israeli football has improved a lot and beating Lokomotiv Moscow, Parma and AC Milan last season was a big step up. "We know we cannot underestimate them."

Cue an embarrassed silence from the watching media.
Lilach Sonin, a presenter on Israeli television, was the brave woman who pointed out his error.
"I think you are speaking about a different team, " she volunteered.

Still Fergie ploughed on. "They've made changes?" he asked.

"No," replied Sonin, "you are talking about a different team - Hapoel Tel Aviv."

Nothing new. On last year's press conference in Leverkusen he called them Kaiserslautern.

its just fergie playing mind games. He wont be that stupid as to go into a press confrence not knowing which team he was playing against.

Well, technically, if they play the wrong opposition, their actual opponents would be awarded a default 3-0 victory.

So you're right. :D

If this really is kind of psychological war, then he scored an own goal at least against Leverkusen. He said that before the second game of the semifinal last year. This motivated Leverkusen's players even more and the result is well known.

Well on current form, I can just picture Demento at the front of the bus going "Right lads, off you get." as it pulls into Maine Road.
:p

Of course it's not a mind game, it's just him being daft. He's shit at mind games, the only person he has ever been able to unsettle with them is Kevin Keegan, a man who could be wound up by a crate of bricks. And even that only happened once.
