It might be interesting to note, that the Spanish Civil war was fought between the Nationalists (Franco's facists) and the Republicans who were called "The Loyalists" in the 1930's...
Among the Loyalists were the international brigades which consisted of volunteers from many countries fighting for democracy & the republic against the facists - among the roughly 35,000 foreign brigades were about 2,500 or so American volunteers. The brigades took colorful names from American history such as the "Abraham Lincoln Brigade", the "George Washington Brigade", and the "John Brown Brigade" and were known for fighting bravely and memorials today mark their sacrifices in Spain.
While Franco won... unlike in the movies where Good always wins... The Loyalists seems to have some interesting links with Americans. :D

I guess my point is, don't change your name... it's much TOO good considering the name ReAL Salt Lake!
In fact, in one way, it balances the neo-facism that had marked some Real Madrid fans over the past decade! :D Cheers!

When is the meeting with the front office re Loyalist's discount for tickets?
MY thought is that the $300 corner seats in the SE corner should wrap around far enough to encompass the Loyalists.

Also worth noting is that Real Madrid's notorious Ultras Sur group have "Siempre Fieles" (forever loyal) as their motto.

I get the feeling Ultras Sur wouldn't be terrible comfortable in Utah :)

Wow, thanks for the history lesson Aosthed.
I think this may be a match made in heaven. RSL and the Loyalists!
I have at work, 2 and maybe 3 persons that were not at the rally Oct 9th, that are ready to come stand with the Loyalists. They may not get season tickets but they want to stand with us at the games that they do come to.

Thanks to you... the wonders of the internet and Google?? (I can't take the credit myself).
However, I think it would rule (just to shut up the naysayers) if Checketts could get an official endorsement from Real Madrid - nothing more than a "...we're honored that a club in America is has chosen to model itself after us, we wish the the best for them..." It's like Christopher Columbus, get the blessing of the King (i.e. the King of Soccer - Real Madrid - the most storied club in the world).
Heck if it were me, I'd go straight to the King of Spain or the Prince and REALLY shut up the naysayers. It would be a nice gesture and you never know they may say "Good Luck" and bless it.

I'm no expert on the Spanish Civil War but I know a bit. The Loyalists may or may not have had names like the "George Washington" brigade, but the truth is I don't think they were the proponents of democracy your making them out to be. A great deal of them (especially the foreign brigade) were in fact Soviet style communists, who actually tried to repress the other far left elements (Trotskyites and Anarchists) within the Loyalist movement. Had the Loyalists stopped the Nationalists from taking power Spain would have likely ended up a Soviet friendly state during the Cold War as the USSR was practically bankrolling the entire Loyalist faction. Real Madrid was also Franco's favorite team and he used them as an example of Spanish athleticism. I'm not choosing sides or trying to attack you here, but things are never as black and white as they might seem on the surface

Hey, UPinSLC before giving me bad rep, f'n read all my posts and maybe post an opinion back you ball-less wonder. Someone with 2 more posts than me shouldn't call another a "troll". Ask aosthed, I'm not some MLS hater. Don't give me bad rep just because you don't like what I say. That's like giving me bad rep had I said, "I think MLS is better than La Liga." Even though not true, had you given me bad rep, at least give me a valid argument but don't give me bad rep just because I think RSL is a crappy name.

I'm not 100% sure on the politics of the average Ultrasureno. Are they still further right than Genghis Khan? They sure would not like the fact that you can't smoke anywhere you want here and that there's no Mahou.
Move this post to the Politics forum if you will, but Utah is as much of a One Party State as Franco's Spain was. Or as a Republican Spain would have been.
Aosthed: Would you settle for the blessing of Raul Lopez? He's not going to be doing anything for a while. Were he & John O'Brien separated at birth?

Rep given.
Regardless of the history of Spain, the "Loyalists" seems to fit perfectly with the "Real" thing. We got lucky on our name I guess, even though I think "Loyalists" would have fit with almost anything. This just fits really really well.

Not so much lucky. I think dysko and blitzzfan had the "inside" track on what the name was going to be.

Well they may have had a hunch, but we all did. I really really don't believe they knew for sure until a few minutes before the announcement (when it got leaked through some letterhead)... Anyway that name had been tossed around for a long time, and I think we maybe even named ourselves before we knew Real was on the table. I was one of the four that was there for that meeting when we named ourselves the Loyalists, but I can't remember if we already thought Real would be the name.
ANYHOO I love the name and it fits great. Let's keep it.

Check out the writer Phil Ball and his book Morobo. It's a great book on the history of soccer in Spain. Ini my opinion he puts forth plenty of evidence showing that Franco didn't care much about soccer let alone caring about Real Madrid.
