If he were dead, yes.

It's better than Rob Stone doing the Champions League (shudder) but I noticed the same thing. His voice was very monotone which is learned in broadcasting 101. :)
But you have to consider the match he was in charge of as well...

Mike Hill is the man. He has an understated style, but you can tell when he gets excited about the play when his voice rises ("sal-GA-DO!") Part of what hurt today was that the audio feed for the crowd wasn't coming in; watch another game with a good crowd and his announcing sounds much better

I noticed today he was much more "friendly" with Tommy. They talked more giving their opinions back and forth. In season's past, quite often Tommy would say something and imply for Hill to respond but he'd just go back to doing PbP.
Hard to explain but it's definitely something I noticed.

actually, i like both mike hill and tommy. their accents sound cool, and they both have that dry british humor. i like tommy's understatedness too. i like 'em better than baseball announcers, anyways

That game was brutally dull. Very disappointing - especially if you are a Roma fan like me - but also for the neutral. 3 goals, but they were scored on about the only 3 real chances of the game. Ugly for both teams really.

Actually, I don't find him dull at all (yesterday's CL match was a little boring, though). I much prefer announcers who aim to do little more than clarify and let the game speak for itself. Constant high volume yammering, now that's dull.

Part of the problem was the background noise in the first half was not real. Or - it was real but from another game or something. That took any excitement out of things as well, and Real took most of the excitement out of the second half.

Exactly. The first half background noise was on mute or something. Plus, the game itself was horrible for most of the first half. Combine those two and you have a seemingly very dull announcer.
Not that Mike Hill is ever particularly thrilling. I thought Tommy had a great game yesterday though.

Tommy: "Well, just like Man United, Madrid has done nothing to shore up its back 4...."
Mike: embarrassed silence
C'mon Mike, give Tommy some stick...
"Yeah, 'but having Rio Ferdinand up front, might take some pressure off Barthez, eh Tommy!"

For what it's worth, Mike Hill is Australian, not British....

In Tommy's defense I think he was talking about last years Man Utd team. And boy was he right.

MIKE HILL RULES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He knows a lot about the game and he does not spend the whole 90 minutes describing every little play like Jack and Ty do. He lets the game speak for itself.......He knows when to chime in.......I'd take him, JP, Tommy, Seamus and Eddie Mighten......they all call a great game......
