As reported in today's Columbus Dispatch...Hejduk and Sanneh have both been called in. They'll report to training camp this Sunday, after Saturday's MLS games.

Sanneh....OK. But Hejduk!????!?!??? Again?? What kind of dirt does he have on Bruce that he keeps getting called up?

Clearly some really nasty KGB quality stuff.

Oh, please... Give the Hejduk bashing a rest. :(
Like most BS posters, I'll be very happy if we have developed a couple of better outside backs than Hejduk by the 2006 WC. But we haven't done so yet, and I don't see Roberto Carlos in a US kit anytime soon.
Hejduk is a terrific utility guy for the time being. He works his butt off, is fast and fit and experienced. He won't get rattled on the road in El Salvador. He can play adequate right back and even fill in on the left in a pinch (see 2002 WC).
The team has two games in less than a week. Outside back is one our the US's thinnest positions. I don't see how Arena could NOT call in the surferdude.
He'll probably start against El Salvador and Cherundolo will certainly start at home against Panama a few days later. I can live with that for now.
Hejduk isn't going to be the key to getting results in these matches anyway. Far more important will be figuring out how the central midfield looks without Reyna and finding some strikers who can put the ball in the net.

The Washington Post reports that Reyna's been called up.

Maybe it's time for the H2 crowd to come to terms with Hejduk. How many more times does BA - someone who clearly posses a lot of soccer intelligence - before the haters crowd realizes that he's the best one for the job right now?

The Washington Post reports that Reyna's been called up.Here's the link:
U.S. Calls Up Injured Reyna For Upcoming Qualifiers (www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A58383-2004Sep28.html)
"It's a strain and these things are day-to-day," Arena said from his home in Fairfax. "We're bringing him in. He might be able to play Saturday for Manchester City, and if not, at best, he can play in one of the games for us. We certainly don't believe it's a long-term problem." The story mentions no other call-ups, but says "players will begin to arrive in Washington this weekend in preparation for" the qualifiers. It also notes that Arena said he'd call in 24 players for the camp.

I'm not here to "bash Hejduk". Just don't like him, mkay? Yes, his more fit than anybody, but I just don't like him as a soccer player. Sorry, just how I feel. I think there are other options, that's all.

Frankie should be called up when considering that we are playing 2 qualifiers in a short span. Frankie is super-athletic and is reliable. Better defenders are on the way (Gooch & Spector), but as for a mere roster spot, Frankie is still useful.

Did you seriously just compare Hejduk to Roberto Carlos? I hope for your sake that you're stoned. Because if you're sober with that comparison, you're an idiot.
I'm not a straight up hater - I'd even be okay with Bruce using him as a late 2nd half sub at right mid - oh wait, that's Cobi's job.
Regardless, we have many better options at defense - even some that can press up the wing.

Reading comprehension. Try it again on that post...

He's saying that unless the US suddenly gets Carlos than Frankie is a better choice at outside back than most players we currently have as outside backs.
And you're calling who an idiot?

Also Man Cities website is reporting that reyna may play this weekend.

Keegen also shares some thoughts on the Arena playing Reyna in light of the injury situation. Its a fair assessment to me.

Thanks for the link. Keegan says "It is not up to us, but I think if he does not play on Saturday then we would be disappointed if he went."
I'd see his point a bit more if this call-up were for one game only. If Reyna is almost fit for this Saturday, surely it's possible that there would be no risk of further injury by the time of the Panama game, which is 11 days after their game this weekend.

No, I read him just damn fine. The suggestion he's making (and you seem to agree) is that because Roberto Carlos isn't available, our best option is Hejduk. The implication is that Hejduk is the best defender in MLS, and one of the best in the world. I'm merely suggesting that R. Carlos is in a completely different class from Heyduk. The comparison is absurd.
I’m sorry, I stand by my earlier contention that the assertion is nuts.

No, he's saying since we don't have any one of R. Carlos caliber (someone that is an automatic stud), that we have to make do with what we have. That's the whole point of his comment, that Frankie isn't near RC and neither is anyone else we have. Hejduk is among the best options of what we have at that position, that's all he's saying.

so we have 24 players to choose from here . . . . and we have definates on reyna, sanneh, and heydude. so we have 21 more spots to fill. Could this be the time when he calls in both friedel and keller? He hasnt done that since the world cup and bigbadbrad has only played for us one time (i think) since the wc.
keepers: friedel, keller, and cannon (he earned it)
Defenders: sanneh, heydude, boca (he should be healthy), cherundolo, gooch (he should get a run-out in the panama game), pope, gibbs, y vanney
midfielders: armas (sadly), reyna, donovan, beez, lewis, pablito, cletus, gaven
forwards: bmb, chinger, johnson, and wolff,
I feel bad for the burn and the metros bc they will be losing johnson and gaven at the most important part of the season only to see them ride the bench but they may be released back to their team. I also dont expect to see convey this round - he isnt playing for reading and he needs to stay and hang out with his new teammates - build some repore with the management etc. I do bet we see johnson make a token appearance in the panama game once bmb has knocked home a couple. Thats 23 however we may see timmay in for friedal since timmay isnt playing and could use some first team action
