I tried looking back through threads before the start of the season, but couldn't find one that mentioned this. So my apologies if I missed any discussion on this.

I've learned from someone else that college soccer now stops the clock when keepers are changed (thus I got to see USD keepers sprinting back and forth at the end of a couple of games about a week ago.)

But in the second of those games I also saw the clock stop with a minute left to go to allow a substitute for the team that was down a goal at the time. I have watched 70+ college games in the past 3+ years, but hadn't seen that happen before. Is this also something new, or have I just 'lucked-out' in not having it seen it?

Under NCAA soccer rules (which also apply to NAIA games) the clock is stopped for substitutions only in the last five minutes of the second half. That's under the 2004 rules.

The NCAA changes the substitution rules in one way or another every frickin' year, so next year the sub rule will probably be what it was last year or the year before. Not too many years ago they stopped the clock for all substitutions no matter when in the game they occurred.

Last year the rule was changed so that time only stops for substitutions during the last 5 minutes of the 2nd half. Other than that time runs during subs... A smart move for teams losing in the last 5 minutes is to rotate goalkeepers everytime a sub is allowed. Subs for goalkeepers are unlimited compared to only one re-entry for field players suring the 2nd half.
This saves some valuable time.

Thanks for the info. Now, another question - where at one of the NCAA sites should I look every year to see what the rules are? Do they usually have a page at the site(s) where it discusses the changes from the year before? That is a bit of info that you might want to include in the 'stickied' thread.

Thanks, Don

Go to http://www.nisoa.com -- National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association. The entire rule book is at the NCAA site, but there is a lot more soccer specific information at the NISOA site.
