Definitely not a soccer movie, but the all-time funniest moment in a movie using soccer has to be Amelie. The movie can be hard to take, especially for most Americans, as it is two steps away from theatre of the absurd. A young neurotic girl is told by her mean-spirited neighbor that she is the cause of a traffic accident, and she takes it heart and blames herself. When she realizes that she is not at fault, she exacts revenge on her neighbor when he's watching a French national team's game. (Of course, this was when France's team was still good  ) She brings a radio and sits at the apartment's cable converter box and just as the French team is about to score, she pulls the plug, so the neighbor misses all the goals. After the goal, reception returns. This happens three times. Sadistic neighbor goes apoplectic. Really, really funny.

That was "Victory" and also starred Pele, along with Michael Caine and Max von Sydow. I remember watching it as a kid. Great flick.

apparently my teams manager, jimmy mcgeough at larne fc, was one of the coaches on escape to victory.

Victory is by far the best soccer movie. Bend it like Beckham was also good, but nothing compares to Pele's bicycle kick in the movie. That was pure cinematic brilliance.

On a Virgin Atlantic flight back in '94, heading into London, I saw a great little soccer movie called "An Evening With Gary Lineker." Anybody else seen that?

Here's the only info I could find online about it:

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0109752/

Credited cast: Paul Merton (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0581615/).... IanClive Owen (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0654110/).... BillMartin Clunes (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0167340/).... Dan HudsonCaroline Quentin (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0703225/).... Monica DespacosLizzy McInnerny (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0570569/).... BrigittaArthur Smith (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0807364/).... Taxi driverChris England (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0257421/).... Man in restaurantGary Lineker (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0512633/).... Himself

It seems it was a made-for-tv movie based on a famous English play.

This one also sounds good, another tv-movie, more recent though (1999)

Bostock's Cup
Former players and associates of third division club Bostock Stanley gather for a celebratory dinner to commemorate their famous FA Cup victory twenty-five years previously during which a shocking truth is revealed.

User comments on imdb make it sound like a classic parody of English football:

"It really is quite staggering that this gem has not been repeated or made available on video or DVD. You really do wonder about some of the people now in charge of television. Night after night we suffer hours of TV that is an insult to the intelligence yet this minor classic is ignored. Has someone lost the master tape?

I am one of the lucky ones who recorded it when it was shown on ITV. As secretary of UniBond League side Burscough Bostock's Cup causes a riot on our away coach trips every season as a new group of players get to see it for the first time. Some of the performances are priceless and the way it lampoons all the various stereotypes in football would make it even more popular today."

Victory has similar ties with the WWII story of Dynamo Kiev, but it's very different as well. If someone could make a movie about that, it would be sensational. The book it would be based off of is called "Dynamo."

I also enjoy "Fever Pitch", even though it doesn't do the book justice. But it does have some great lines such as "Arsenal's form is hardly a good basis for a relationship, even this season."[/QUOTE]

gotta love Fever Pitch! My gf also has a problem with my Arsenal boxers...whats wrong with women? So many great quotes from that movie (though not as good as the book), mostly supplied by his "girlfriend."

I would have to say my favorite soccer movie is "Welcome to our World" It may be about the Women's team but I love it.

Haven't seen the one with Pele but I will look for it next time I go movie shopping!

Some people put have door mats with their favourite club on it, others have towels, others hang posters in their room, and you.....you wear Arsenal underwear :). Kudos to you chief.

Women, sometimes you love 'em, sometimes you can't stand them, eh? :)

My god...eight pages of Victory, LadyBugs, and Green Machine.

Have none of you seen "The Match"

The movie of a rivalry game between two Scottish pub teams...the loser of the final match after 76 years loses their pub to the other. Funny and decent soccer action...also I love when the scottish hooligan goes "ENGLISHMAAAANN!!!!" and chases the english guy through the streets. That has to be the best soccer movie I've seen.

Victory is a second...Pele's choreography of the match, Max Von Sydow, Michael Caine do great jobs. Stallone's acting is forced and the french resistance also is not well done. The director did a fantastic job with setting his shots and the scenery was awesome. But who ever edited the film should be shot...there are glaring loops in the movie...scenes that have been cut in out of order to the plot.

Bend It Like Beckham is serviceable and I like getting a glimpse of the racial mix in England.

Fever Pitch...those people should be shot. They ruined that movie. There were very few scenes involving soccer...only the table soccer scene and the bit when he's coaching the kids stands out. They really missed the point of the book...his romantic difficulties were such a small part of the book...instead of his life revolving around soccer it revolves around women. If only they could have done as good a job on this movie as they did on some of Hornby's other books like High Fidelity...great non soccer movie.

So I hear "The Miracle..." might be made into a movie...you know American author in Second Division Italian town.
