Bend It Like Beckham
I don't think there's ever been a good sports movie - Soccer included - They're all just too hokey or stupid or trite or unbelievable or sappy - And the sports scenes too staged, too phoney, badly filmed and often unrealistic
That all said - The better movies use Sports only as a background for comedy, drama, suspense, romance, etc - Or coming of age and finding your own identity - Which is what Bend It Like Beckham was really about
Best Sports movie overall?? - North Dallas Forty or Semi-Tough

Nobody has mentioned "Gregory's Girl", a 70's Scottish movie by the same Director that did A Local Hero (Forsyth?). Quriky and fun, the soccer is worked in because the lead is a goofy guy that falls in love with a tomboy who is the best player on a boys football team, and there is some footage about that on the pitch.
This was a very funny movie - It's the only one I've seen with language choices of Scottish or English.
Another movie that had a little soccer mixed in is a swedish film called "My Life as a Dog"

I would vote for the "The Cup," the film about the Tibetan kids trying to watch the world cup.
There really haven't been many good soccer films, but the recent "Miracle Of Bern," ("Das Wunder von Bern") might be the one that runs away from the pack by all of the reviews I have read.

I saw a preview of this German film called 'Das Wunder Von Bern' aka THE MIRACLE OF BERN. It supposed to be a big hit last year when it was released last year. It combined the story of WC 1954 in Switzerland and the return of German prisoners of war from the Soviet Union on the same year. i will check it out.

Escape to Victory gets my vote, but an honourable mention must go to the football/PE class scene in Kes -- a stroke of genius!
When Saturday Comes (starring Sean Bean) is rubbish.

I liked Bend it...because I like hokey movies and I wish I were still in high school. However, I was disappointed by the action bits.
I loved the game bits in Mean Machine. I've watched that movie way to many times and even managed to find a copy with spanish dubbing...very funny.

Isn't that the one with Robert Duvall coaching a Scottish team? I thought it was pretty good, but Duvall as a Scot was hard to listen to. :o

That was "Victory" and also starred Pele, along with Michael Caine and Max von Sydow. I remember watching it as a kid. Great flick.

The Cup is pretty awesome. About a young Tibetan monk that is obsessed with the World Cup and Ronaldo ...
Highly recommend
