View Full Version : Teaching in New York?

Hey all. I know we have a pretty wide range of teachers on this forum. Do any of you teach in New York? I'm in the last year of college in Maryland, and I'll finish up with a Maryland teaching certificate in addition to my degree. I know that New York has some other requirements for teaching (ie: there is basic certification reciprocity, but I would also have to jump through a hoop or three). Does anybody know specifically what extra lengths I would have to go through? I spent part of my childhood living in Rochester, NY, and looking at a number of factors, I think I might like to teach up there as well (teachers make more both overall and as beginning teachers compared to Maryland numbers, and it is much MUCH cheaper to live in NY than Maryland. For the same money my mother paid for a townhouse in MD, she could have bought a huge house with an indoor pool in the Rochester area.)
Any info/helpful tips would be greatly appreciated, as I'll be job hunting shortly after New Years.
Thanks!

Hi Jacen,
hmm, the first part of my reply got cut off. Sorry, didn't mean to just hit you with facts. :)
I thought you might also be interested in this data on New York teacher salary (http://teacherportal.com/salary/New-York-teacher-salary) and comfort of living. We'll be adding the full requirements (read: hoops) for NY Teachers soon as well.
Good luck!

I remember that my MA program had a ton of NY high school teachers who were trying to get their MA before a 5 year cut-off set by the state.
Is it still the case that in order to teach high school, you have 5 years to finish an MA once you start teaching? (I'm asking for Jacen, not for myself.)

No need to ask for me...I started this thread five years ago. I taught in MD for four years and I'm off to NY for full time graduate school now. I might spend a year between my MA and PhD getting national board certification.

It's true for all public school teachers, K - 12, I believe.

By all public school teachers, you mean all public school teachers in New York, right?

Doh!
What a bump, though. Five years! I didn't realize. I was going to say that I thought you had made other plans.
