So does this mean then that only 4 of the 20 National clubs are fully professional ? I thought there was more than that. Why not let all 20 National teams play in it

Only four clubs in National are entering the Cup. I believe that any club that was in D2 and went down can keep its pro status for 2 years (to be verified but I read it somewhere). I don't think you can be in National and have pro status otherwise (meh thinks). So at best, you could have 6 pro teams in national. I don't know where that magic number 4 comes from.
I believe it was 4 clubs last year and this year it's also four clubs that go to the cup. Would have to research if it is always 4 Nat clubs, but I am not sure I care that much. Since 3 clubs from D2 go down each year, I am not sure why it is only 4. Meh thinks you could have all 6 from the 2 previous years still pro and eligible for the league cup. Dunno.
So the first round has 24 clubs, 20 from ligue 2 and 4 from National.
About pro status:
You can be an amateur club but have pro players via federal contracts.

I wish that all the National teams were professional. I think it sucks that only 4 div.3 teams get to play in the league cup. The CFA and CFA 2 should be the real amatuer leagues. The 'A' in CFA stands for amateur doesnt it. Make the National fully professional and change the name of it to 'Ligue 3'. That would be great.

You won't get an argument from me on this one, SportBoy. I agree.
there used to be two groups for the old division 2 (below division 1 aka ligue 1) and a division 3, but those times are gone.
The top team for each group in div 2 would go up to div 1 and there was a playoff between the two second teams.
then, they changed to the ligue1, ligue2, national, etc.

Well I guess the reason that the 3rd division isnt fully professional is because it consists of mostly smaller towns who probably couldnt afford to have their team have professional status. Of course if France was a rabid soccer country then it probably wouldnt matter the size of the city then. I'm sure the 3rd divison would be fully professional if soccer in France was huge like elsewhere.
I dont have a problem if they want to abolish the league cup. If only 44 clubs and only 2 full divisions compete then why bother. I'd only wanna keep it if Ligue 1 Ligue 2 and the ENTIRE National competed that way you could have 3 full divisions of 60 clubs playing. I know the league cup is suppose to be open to all the professional teams only but I wouldnt have a problem if they let the whole National play. I dont see the harm in letting the non professional amateur National teams in it. The CFA and on down clubs should be in the Coup de France, top 3 divisions in the Coup de ligue.

Well, how many pro clubs are there in England, Spain, Italy or Germany ??? I am sure it's far more than 44 but that would be interesting to compare.
the league cup is kinda joke anyways. It was started pretty recently in France. There's really only one cup, and that's the coupe de France. Coupe de la ligue, nobody really cares.

Besançon, Rouen and Valence were relegated from Ligue 2 last season.
I believe that Wasquehal are one of the only remaining professional league teams in the National league.
BTW: thanks iougs, what a way to put down my thread..... :D
and I think the Sochaux fans would disagree with you.

Personally, despite it being against Marseille. I wouldn't be suprised if PSG play a reserve side. The LIgue 1 match is far more importnat for us.
Still it would be nice, if we can keep the winning streak going, but I don't see it.
Should keep the ultras happy for the week..... :)
