Anyone got a better plan other than the Minute Rice plan? I've burnt three pans full of bulk rice trying the old school method of cooking the stuff. I get the whole "tending to the water" thing but GEEZ!!!!! Speed the dang thing up!!!

Lill help!! :p

I use steamer by black n' decker, it was like $20 and works great. It takes about an hour but you don't have to watch it, usually I just let it go and then get to it when I remember, which is sometimes in the morning :P It fits 1.5 cups of rice in it so I can make several meals out of it. You can also get bigger ones if you're like me and make food for whole week at once :)

This has been a presentation of Barra Brava Cooking Hour

Funny Dave read my mind with this...

I have a rice question that fits nicely here.

I own a nice steamer like BBBulldog is talking about, but being the stereotypical man that I am I tossed the directions out before reading them.

What I want to know is how many cups of water should I add to the steamer for each cup of RICE I put in?

I have tried one to one but thought it was a bit crap. :o

I think it depends on type of rice, I eat only brown and for that it's 1.5 cups to 1.5 cups water

Bit expensive in my opinion but by the time you have paid for all that burnt thrown out rice it may be the cheaper option ;)

A non Barra lurking so pardon my interuption, but I tend to cook ALOT of rice.
I generally use Basmati rice as I find ti to be the best tasting white rice.

One cup of dry rice into pan deep enough to hold it and 1 1/2 cups of water. Rinse the rice well until the water runs clear. drain and add 1 1/2 cups of water per cup of rice. Lots of times you see 2 cups of water per 1 cup of rice but this tends to make the rice soggy.

Bring the rice to a boil once the water reaches just above the level of rice turn the heat way way way down. Cover and cook for 11 minutes. NEVER take the top off the rice while cooking just be patient. Once it hits eleven minutes squeeze a bit of lemon juice and stir the rice, cover and wait until it's time to serve.

Cheers

Red&Black has a dynamite Persian rice recipe that I'd love for him to post.

Dave n Vicki, my recommendation to you is to go to one of the local oriental markets and check out the rice cookers. You could buy there or locate one on the Internet, but at least you'd know what you are looking for.

Marcia and I consume beaucoup rice and our favorite is CalRose that we get in twenty lb. bags from Costco (we store it in big jars while we consume it over about a month to six weeks).

I put in a couple of handfuls, then rinse it twice and cover with about 1/2 inch of water and depress the cooking button. 30 minutes later you've got good rice!

Rice cookers are cheap at target, I bought one because like you, I have no culinary skill. These work wonders though!

Sounds eerily close to the 'Marion Barry' recipe. ;)

Better yet, stop by our house and take five of the twenty or so rice cookers we have :)

My wife is from the Philippines and with a ton of relatives in and around Northern VA stopping by, it seems as though we have one on 24/7. We get our rice from Park and Shop, an Oriental store in Centreville.
