That's really bad news but Alonso and Didi ain't crap. Those two wern't the problem today. Hope it is only half that time.

In the meantime either Harry steps up or I'd play Warnock -- he'd at least take a whack at C*** Ronaldo rather than let him run by!

Here's my take: assuming he doesn't have permanent damage or his bones don't turn into glass like Kirkland, this is a very good thing. No, you may not have some of whatever's in my medicine cabinet. Let me explain.

We have clearly seen in the last few weeks that we are going to look like world beaters at times (Monaco, WBA) and like my old U-11 team at others (Man U, Bolton). A lot of these players are fundamentally changing the way they play, both on a personal level and with each other. Personally, I can't believe Rafa is getting doo-dooed on by some of the media (and us, for that matter) after half a dozen games. In two years, 2/3 of the squad will shipped to America for pre-season will be gone (rightfully so - we got rid of GH for a reason, we should purge ourselves of his mistakes on the roster just like we've purged ourselves of his tactical errors.) We're about 30% of the way to being done with our purging, but still have plenty of deadweight (as we saw today).

This season will be moderately painful. In our guts, we know that. Not even Roman (or a counterpart) could turn around this ship in one season. What Rafa needs (and hasn't been getting, honestly) is time to settle down. Now he has that time. Until Stevie comes back, it doesn't count. I'm not saying it's an excuse to be sitting 12th at Boxing Day. However, when we have little whoopsies like today, the Chicken Littles won't be running around the room like their panties were on fire. (I tried to mix another metaphor in there, but couldn't.)

Come Boxing Day, Stevie's back, we're sitting 6th, 5 points off of fourth, 14 points off the leaders, I'm a happy camper. Then we can start picking things apart, criticizing set pieces, complaining about forwards not working together. Until then, we're basically forced to give Rafa the time to settle in that he deserved from the outset.

Great point, fans shouldn't worry as much, in all reality, all I care about is Champions League. And Rafa has deserved alot of respect, beating Monaco, as long as he can get Liverpool pass the group phase, he has been well worth axing Houllier.
However, considering LFC doesn't win the CL, he does have to get at least fourth in the EPL.

The league is Rafa's true test and what we need to be worrying about waaaay before getting to certain phases in Europe. If we can't beat English teams week in and week out, we don't even deserve to be playing againt the elite clubs.

I am not as invested in the fortunes of Liverpool as you might be, but I still care and want to see them do well. So this Arsenal fan is definitely rooting for Rafa to turn things around fast, and does care about Liverpool's fortunes in the EPL, if only to avoid putting in another performance against Man U like last night and giving that squad reason to start acting arrogant again.

Alonso will be going forward more. Deiti will play the holding role. We have nothing to be worried about.

But as an Everton fan living in Manchester, you should know (and take pride in) the fact that a home match with WBA is one that we would have considered ourselves lucky to win 1-0 under GH. We would routinely drop points against the WBAs, Wolves, and Leicester Cities of the world, and blame it on bad luck. To come into a game that we should win comfortably and actually win it comfortably was part of the progress I was speaking about.

Yes indeed, kind of like the Wolves match last year at Anfield when Hyypia had to score in the 90+ minute to beat wolves 1-0, the 3-0 win against WBA was much more convincing

With Stevie out for a while, now is the true test for the new guys, Garcia, Alonso, Cisse et al. Gerrard was and is still the engine of this team but let's see how far these guys can push the "RED" Ferrari until we get back our engine.

One man's misfortune is another man's opportunity, and perhaps we'll get a glimpse of just how good Alonso can be while Gerrard is on the sidelines.
