PFDC - MESSINA, FC Messina and Iranian star defender Rahman Rezaei had a successful Serie A home debut, as the Sicilians defeated AS Roma by 4-3. In Germany, neither Hashemian nor Mahdavikia played through, while in Austria no Iranian came into play in Sturm Graz' home defeat.

Neither Mehdi Pashazadeh, still suffering from a nagging thigh injury, nor young Javad Razzaghi were even on Sturm's bench, as the former club of Mehrdad Minavand lost 0-2 to Austria Vienna.

Vahid Hashemian, after not travelling to Israel with Bayern Munich last Wednesday, started for the Bavarians the second consecutive time in German Bundesliga. However, the striker failed to impress against Borussia Dortmund in an overall very weak Bayern side, being subbed out at halftime when Bayern was trailing by one goal. The German giants then went down 0-2, before snatching a lucky draw by last-minute-goals from defender Lucio and Roy Makkay. Hashemian's replacement Claudio Pizarro was not involved in any of the goals, nor in any mentionable scene, still the striker from Peru will probably start instead of the Iranian next week.

In another fifth round Bundesliga match, Iranian winger Mehdi Mahdavikia was benched by coach Toppmoeller. The heavily critisized coach had seen the Iranian in bad shape, a rather surprising view, considering the the awful performances of most Hamburg players, who were contributing less to the recent games than the sizzling right footer. Not surprisingly HSV fell behind 0-2 against FC Kaiserslautern, before Mahdavikia and left winger Rahn came on after an hour and immediately improved Hamburg's attacking play. After Mahdavikia and Barbarez combined over right side, Kaiserslautern's defense could clear the Bosnian's cross, but Swiss Wicky hammered it under the crossbar to make it 1-2. However, Kaiserslautern managed to keep the result until the final whistle. [ Kaiserslautern's Iranian player Ferydoon Zandi fired the hosts ahead after 18 minutes from the penalty spot ]

In Italy's Serie A Rahman Rezaei helped his side Messina Calcio to upset AS Roma. Messina, now standing in fifth position of the table after two rounds, went ahead twice, but Montella equalized both times. The star striker was not marked closely enough by Messina's Fusco twice, who was subbed out later in the game. The visitors from the capital even went ahead through Montella's third, when the forward curved around Rezaei outside the box, scoring with a tremendous effort. But Messina recovered and was still able to turn the match around, getting away with a not undeserved victory. Rahman Rezaei played the full 90 minutes as centerhalf of his team's four-back, which apart from the goals barely allowed any real scoring chances to AS Roma.
