Ichiro just hit his 236th of the season.
Can he break the single season 257 all time hit record held by George Sisler in 1920?
Discuss.

If he wanted to, he'd be a home run hitter. Instead, he just tries to get on base. It can be done, and it's one of the last plateaus standing in American baseball.

As of tonight, 14. He's gonna do it. He needs 22 hits. He's been in a slump in the past few weeks, but if he keeps hitting at least 2 hits a game (which is a bad night for Ichiro), he'll shatter it. He's already broken the single-season singles record, which hasn't even been grazed in 80 years.
Ichiro is one of the greatest athletes in the world and will go down as one of the greatest ever. He brings truth to the phrase, "Actions speak louder than words". All hail Ichiro-san. :D

no doubt. he's a phenomenal player. the best leadoff of the decade (i assume, although i dont follow mlb all that much). But i dont think two hits is a bad night for ichiro... assuming he gets 5 turns at bat, two hits would mean .400, which no batter had done in decades right?
22 hits/14 game=1.57 hits per game. Assuming he has 80 turns at bat, it is likely he will do it. What sets him apart this season is that he didnt go through his usual 2nd half slump as much.
All Hail ichiro!! i hope he breaks the record.

I believe Ichiro is gonna break the record this season, if he does not have to walk (four wide? don't know how to say 敬遠 in English....)

I was just saying that for Ichiro, getting only 2 hits in a game would be bad, since he's used to 4 and 5 hit games. Of course, 2 hits are a good game for anybody, that's just how good Ichiro is. ;)
And the last time anyone had a season batting average better than .400 was Ted Williams, in 1941, and he was hitting .406. Ichiro's hitting .369 right now, which is outstanding, but he won't break .400 this season. Maybe next year though, as long as he hits consistently all season.

I agree...that was a lame comment.
I didnt like Ichiro in the beginning but after watching him play over the years, I have to say now that he is a very special player.
Even though its his hitting thats getting all the attention right now, I think his defensive capabilities are underrated.
For a little guy, he's got a GUN.
Great baserunner too.

Says 8 in remaining 9 games to reach. 9 more to break. I want him to break the record by big, great number that followers won't be able to break so easily for a while. It took more than 80 years since Sisler's!!? I want more for Ichiro's. 100 years?? Or never!!

Yea, what makes this record even harder to break is that when Sisler was playing baseball, pitchers couldn't throw the variety of pitches that pitchers today do, nor nearly as fast. This is the reason why no one has even come close to breaking the 80-year record, because batting is that much harder these days. Just goes to show how good of a hitter Ichiro is.
8 hits in 9 games? HA that's nothing but a breeze for Ichiro. :D

8 hits in 9 games? HA that's nothing but a breeze for Ichiro. :D I wanted to think so. But I'm afraid it's up to all opponents, how they will play the game. Actually, today's, Rangers (!?) chose four balls, and made him to walk, I heard. Mariners' fans, Japanese, and some Asians cheer for Ichiro, but what about the rest of Americans...? Possibly, they don't want a Japanese to break the redocod... But. Ichiro maybe can hit against any bad throws. And, he's not only good at his *arms* but legs!! He runs so fast and in tircky way!! Go-Go Ichiro!! (ah..., it sounds like Hamatachi-san...!!)

it's been a lot of intentional walk. i thinik he has 17 or 18 of them but more than half of them are given after august. the last few hits for the record will be tough to get. so much pressure for ichiro and nobody who faces him wants to be a part of history.

The Rangers walked Ichiro because there was a chance for a runner to score if he got a hit (Randy Winn got the hit anyway). I think the only reason why Ichiro has been walked has been because the opposing team does not want to loose. I have noticed that they do pitch to Ichiro if he is leading-off and inning. The teams that the Mariners have been playing all have a chance to win the American League West title. So, every game counts. There are three teams’ three games apart in winning. Ichiro's record is irrelevant to them. He will probably be walked a few times (depending on the flow of the game) the last nine or so games. I can't picture a Major Leaguer not pitching to Ichiro because he might break an eighty year old record.
In Japan, I have watched pitchers not pitch at someone to keep a record. I have always thought it disrespectful to the record holder (for example Oh's record) to guard his record that way. After all, it could have been broken but it was blocked. It makes no sense.
You know, I was curious about how non-Mariners fans felt about Ichiro. So, I went to the mlb.com forum. It does seem like a lot of Americans are excited for Ichiro. In the Yankees forum, people were saying that they would love to see Ichiro in pin-stripes. :) There were varying opinions about the record. But in general, it seems like lots of people are excited regardless of which team they normally root for. I hope he breaks the record and does it again next season!
