hmmm how can I make this short and sweet...
Iran has a LOT of natural gas and oil and thus there is huge interest in the country. Israel feels threatened since Iran wants to equip itself with nuclear weapons and has the missiles to reach Israel as it is.
Israel cannot attack Iran since they have promissed to retaliate, and a retaliation on Israel from Iran would be catastrophic.
US cannot attack Iran since it is in no position to do that with the current economics in the US (huge budget deficit along with massive realotting of funds to Iraq from other main national sectors) and military distribution (we have the reserves rotating already so there is no one left thats readily available), its just not feasible.
Only options left to stop Iran from becoming the ultimate power in the middle east with threats to Israel would be via talks and threats... and it seems to be working just fine :)
for now.

Thanks for the info. I have a lot of questions, if you guys don't mind.
Hasn't the USA been after Iran's oil for a while? Wasn't that why the CIA helped get rid of Prime Minister Mossadeq (sp?) and put Shah Pahlevi in place? Who is really calling the shots in Iran? Is it Khatami or those religious clerics?

Well from here on it gets tricky as to whom u ask... its mostly a matter of opinion and speculation. Khatami had a little power when he had the majority in the iranian parlament. He lost that control when everyone boycotted the elections and thus lost the majority there too.
In Iran, the current power resides with the (Rahbar) which is one very hardcore cleric and can do or undo any act done by any branch of government. Thus it is a mild monarchy in itself that replaced the kingdom system under the previous shah.
What the CIA should have done was never interfere and create what it did, however many beleieve that the current system serves the Americnas well since the feeling of insecurity in the region calls for the presence of the US and other powers in the region. Thats precisely what the US wanted and currently has.

Well oil is kinda jacked... you see by contract and law we have to abide by opec rules and thus the output and price are dictated by that organization. However the drilling, expedition and selling of anything outside of that is free for all... The Country and pre-sold (yes you heard correctly) pre-sold its oil to the european countries, specially France (Total is the main contractor) with initial investments in the 2 to 4 billion dollar regiuon and thus creating significant allies within europe to help the Government stay in power.
In short, European countries support the current regime because they get a cheap ride via the oil.

I can't say I blame those European countries. How many Americans want cheap gas and don't care what happens on the other side of the world as long as we get it?

Thats very true, a good point indeed. You see its all about the money. Economics are what dictate world action and thats just fine.
The problem is when you try to justify a move by labeling it under humanitarian and democratic freedom BS that the US is trying to do. We all know its about the oil, yet its tabboo to admit it so we find excuses like the freedom of expression and the creation of democratic societies to play with peoples minds.
Totally unwarranted.

Two decades of clandestine reserach has gone unchecked, no one knows for sure. However if they dont have one, they very soon will at the current rate. Israel for one believes that Iran will have a bomb ready for use by mid 2005 without any outside help. Again there is no way to verify any of this, strictly speculation.

Has the Iranian NT ever played the Israeli NT? I read somewhere that Iranian athletes are forbidden from competing with Israeli athletes b/c Iran refuses to recognize Israel as a country. So what would happen if they met in a soccer tournament?

Yes they have played with each other. Before the Iranian revolution Isreal and Iran had good connections with each other.

If they ever were to be drafted again against each other, Iran would walk, and not play.

Israel said the same thing about Iraq having a bomb by 2005 too. I'd take any published Israeli intelligence with a grain of salt. But if you have seen their classied files, then it's a different story. :)
