This story is very big on the news this evening, but seems to have been dropped from BS discussion...should CBS apologise, do nothing, admit it has been duped, or just...admit who developed docs? If CBS believes docs are real, would it make sense for outside investigation?

From a journalistic perspective, should these docs have been better vetted before dicussed on air?

I don't think CBS was duped. I don't think it's possible that they really thought those documents were genuine. I think CBS knew exactly what it was doing.

I dunno, maybe I'm giving them too much credit. There are too many unanswered questions.

I'm with you, Barb. CBS knew exactly what it was doing. They neglected to air the concerns that Killian's wife and son had about the documents, their "experts" turn out not to have vetted the documents, etc. This is a classic case of a story that was written with a point of view already in mind. Shameless journalism. CBS could've restored dignity had they simply said they would appoint an independent investigation to review the documents.

The timing is suspicious. Soon after Bush's attack dogs the Not-So-Swift Liars For Bush get very publically kicked to the curb for spreading nonsense about Kerry and Bush's numbers start falling after the temporary post-convention pop, we suddenly get this alleged anti-Bush forgery. What better way to help the Bush campaign than to supposedly "get caught" releasing an obvious forgery that attacks him?

Ok... it's gets worse... Now CBS' experts say they didn't authenticate Bush memos....

http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/09/15/bush.guard.memos/index.html

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Three document experts who were asked by CBS News to examine memos alleging that President Bush received special treatment during his service in the Texas Air National Guard told CNN Tuesday that they did not authenticate the documents -- and one said the network "ignored" her reservations about them before a "60 Minutes" broadcast last week.

CBS deliberately neglected to review these docs with proper due diligence; in what is seen as a deliberate attempt to smear the President. Dan Rather needs to resign NOW!

CBS to Release New Statement on Docs Flap
Wednesday, September 15, 2004
NEW YORK — CBS News, dogged over questions about the authenticity of memos apparently showing that President Bush shirked his National Guard service more than 30 years ago, is expected to release a statement about the document snafu Wednesday afternoon.
