I was reading an article on MLSNet News (http://www.mlsnet.com/MLS/news/mls_news.jsp?ymd=20040714&content_id=8208&vkey=news_mls&fext=.jsp) and they were talking about the SLC expansion team. And they gave some "hypothetical" rosters of players they can steal from the other teams... This one was my favourite:
SAMPLE LINEUP B: Matt Reis, Milton Reyes, David Stokes, Kelly Gray, Ezra Hendrickson, Ramiro Corrales, Daryl Powell, Mark Lisi, Sasha Victorine, Sergio Galvan Rey, Joe-Max Moore

With that roster, there won't be any "too much parity" discussions on these boards next year.

Yikes! What was starting lineup A?

Addition by subtraction can be a good thing.
If Adin Brown cannot recover then they will not be getting Matt Reis.

I think this thread should be more or less what will the expansion do for us. With Chivas and SLC able to snag certain players. Not to rehash old threads but who does DCU protect from the expansion draft? Do we let someone like Rimando go unprotected and let him skip off to Chivas?

Not that I necessarily disagree, but then at that point we have to pick up another keeper. And who else do we not protect?

Rimando has value. Rimando has costs.
First, leave any player with no value unprotected. Then you start looking for players with extremely large costs, say if Etcheverry at max salary was still on the team.
Now for Rimando, even if his supposed cost was greater than his value does not mean you should neccessarily leave him unprotected. GK is a funny position. There are maybe 14 solid starters floating around now on 10 teams, soon to be 12 teams. If the other teams look to be leaving their second GKs available, then maybe you throw Rimando out there too, and let the expanders take their pick. If not, then hang onto Rimando. The expanders will be picking up scumby GKs and will be desperate for the key starter, so Rimando's value will suddenly increase.
BTW, does anybody really think Chivas USA will try to get by with a hyphenated Mexican-American GK at starter?

That could be why Nowak has brought Nicky back to the number 1 position. I figure he is letting them fight it out for the playoff role, but it may also be partly a "who gets protected" battle/marketing ploy (i.e. see how good he is wink wink, nudge nudge) too.
That being said I would hate to lose Nicky, but it's a foregone conclusion since I picked up his Jersey last offseason :(

Can we afford to lose both Stokes and Hendrickson?? ;^)

Uhm. I changed what you wrote. A lot. And the answer to the abbreviated question is "No, we can't afford to lose EZ". He's our second best defender, and he's critical to our week defense. Especially if we're worried about losing Nellie next year.
As for Stokes, the question should be "can we afford to keep Stokes"? I'd rather drop him and pick up some other defender out of the Nepalese local league.

Don't mind Kravi, he's had it out for Stokes since day 1! But yeah I would agree, we can't afford to not keep EZ protected, he's got a lot of value and will be the key to any defense next year minus Nellie. I'd say Namoff (even though I think he's a lot better than most want to believe he is), Prideaux and Stokes could be the easily left unprotected for the draft.

I think leaving Namoff unprotected would be a bad idea. Especially if Nelsen is gone. He can't take Nelsen's place of course, but we can't afford to lose him or EZ IMHO.

It isn't just Kravi. ;) The best thing Stokes has done for us all year is sit on the bench.
I wouldn't leave Namoff unprotected he's been one of the most consistent players all year for us. I'd say Pri (who is subject to lapses), Stokes and Stewart (if he's still on the team at that point, due to obvious salary cap implications) are the people we leave unprotected.

That's a possible roster before they add their allocations, discovery players and draft picks.

Kasey Keller would be a decent chance to be in goal for them next year.

Namoff has been DC's most consistent defender all year and he is basically playing out of position. His best position is defensive midfielder. And he is probably the best defensive midfielder on the roster. Explain again why DC should expose him to the expansion draft?!?

Namoff is probably a good dollar value. It makes no sense to let him go for free.

I always saw Kasey coming over whenever Seattle was awarded a team. If he can't play in Seattle yet but still wants to live stateside I say he picks the other Washington, I'd like to see him play here :) We can trade him to the new Seattle team in 2007. 2006 is too soon for two more teams.
So, if Chivas is looking for mexican-american-ish players, is the Utah team looking for the pasty-white-est players in the draft ? ;)
The draft will definitely be intersting to watch unfold. How the coach/management of each team manage their players could be key for their next few seasons. Like last time, I expect to see the max$ guys unprotected.
Is there a rule against trading for a dispersal/expansion pick? I'd think there would be, but nothing stopping KP from telling the Utah guy to pick someone from another team and we'd trade player X to them for him after the draft ......

Word. Just the kind of guy you want in a salary-capped league.
