View Full Version : Rocky Mountain Derby?

Forgive me for intruding on your supporter's subthread, but I think I have an idea for y'all: It would be cool if your supporters club (when established) got together with Colorodo's supporters and established some sort of a derby a la Brimstone Cup (created by Fire and Burn supporters). It would be mutual beneficial due to the fact that the Rapids have no real rival in the league and your team would have something to play for late in the season if the opening campaign isn't that successful. It would also go a long way in building unity among fans by giving them another reason to travel to your closest rival. Forgive me, I'm from the east and for all I know the trip from SLC to Denver takes ten hours but it's just a thought.
For the uninitiated, a derby (pronounced Dhaaaar-Bee by US soccer analyists) is a season-long aggregate goal competition between two arch rivals. Granted, in most leagues such teams only meet twice(Rangers-Celtic aside), but it may be something you in SLC should consider. The Rapids have a SSS on the horizon about the same time as the proposed one for your team so a strong rivalry is a good foundation to add to the excitement they will bring. Plus, that Dela-Tores guy on the Rapids is just about the ugliest guy ever so that can be the hatred you need to start a heated rivalry. You could even come up with a cool trophy or title for the each year's winner like "Rocky Mountain Cup" or "King of the Mountains".
Sorry for the intrusion. My teams are all in a rut right now and posting to their discussion threads will either give me a heartattack or make me cry: The Rev's blew a two goal lead to the Mutts and probably won't make the playoffs, ManU needed an own goal at the final whistle to tie Bolton, and Olympique Marseilles lost 2-0 to a team I can neither pronounce nor spell.
Good luck with your new team! I can't say I'll ever be a supporter, but I hope you give em heck in the west. If anyone is ever interested, there is room for a SLC site in the Matchnight.com network. Though the forums on BigSoccer are better, the sites on the network are the best independent sources of US soccer news anywhere. I'd contact the administrators of the various sites to find out what it takes to run one.

Great idea. The time to get it rolling for the SLC folks is.... well, sometime after the team name and colors are announced.
Speaking of SLC and DEN, anyone feeling like adding their two-bits worth please tell me where to move in my Guestbook. For example, I like the size and location of SLC but I'm honestly worried about how not being mormon will affect my career. So even though Denver's only got flat land to it's east, that may be a better spot to move.

It is also pronounced this way by the rest of the English speaking soccer world, not just US Soccer TV people. The team in England is pronounced the same way.
The Derby can be one game between two, close rivals too.
I'm all for getting some kind of cup made. King of the Rockies sounds cool.

A Cup is a great idea, as long as there is a decent set of rules to determine the winner, given that Colorado-Salt Lake will be playing multiple games against each other during the season. If the season series were tied 2W-2L for both teams, aggregate goals decides the winner, etc....
This is going to be a great rivalry.

If it was me, I'd look seriously at Ft. Collins. 60 miles North of Denver, a college town and not yet that expensive.

I think SLC pretty much blows mormon or unmormon....... I would opt for Ft. Fun myself given the choice.

King of the Rockies? I like that name too. Maybe Coors will sponsor the trophy? ;)

Sounds like a good thing to me. So if we're going to be the "King of the Rockies" then maybe the REAL thing does make sense!
Sorry, I couldn't resist. ;)

We'll play the Galaxy in the I 15 Cup. The losers have to stand between Sigi and a Las Vegas buffet.
Unless they move to San Antonio over the winter, we'll play the Earthquakes in the I 80 Cup. We'll meet half way in Winnemucca or Battle Mountain in one of those establishments that Landon Donovan could not score in and award the trophy there.

How about, the Highlanders cup?

1) A good rivalry is set up over time. Fake rivalries are created right off the bat. Let real hate develop over 2-3 years, and let the rivalry naturally develop.
2) I believe the Brimstone and Atlantic cups are settled on points first. Then goal difference, and the other tie-breakers. If SLC has a cup, why not use that same system?

First off, I think the thing about the Dela-Tores guy being ugly and how that can start up some hatred was hilarious. I can't figure that one out though, it's so ridiculous.
Secondly, I like the idea of a cup between the Rapids and RSL, and the Highlanders' Cup name. That'd be sweet. It is a 9 hour drive, so it's not really a derby (those are in the same city). But it's still cool to have a Rocky Mountain rivalry.
Last off, to the guy wondering which city to move to, I've spent a ton of time in both. Salt Lake is pretty sweet for business, outdoor recreation of all types, and it's much more of a cultural center than most people would think. Of course, almost all of the surrounding cities and towns and towns in the rest of the state are culturally sterile, but Salt Lake is pretty cool. Not being mormon should not at all affect your business there, although it's true that I have heard of some small problems with that, but I think that issue is by now dissappeared or almost gone.
Denver is a bigger city, it has ridiculous amounts of traffic, it takes forever to get anywhere. There is more happening culturally, for sure. If you're a skier, you definitely want Utah. Colorado skiing is over rated. The resorts are bigger and fancier with half the snow. They are more expensive, and you'll be lucky to drive to a decent one in under 2 hours. I don't mean to rip on Denver too much, because it is much better as far as diversity and culture go. You won't find any churches getting away with first of all purchasing Main Street, and then denying the bill of rights on it. But that's something completely different.

DLT looks like an oompa lumpa. He is ugly, we know it. He might be on Chivas next year anyway, so we don't care.

This would be great. I hope the two teams can coordinate something like this. I imagine MLS will try to promote it as well.

Denver is a better city, hands down. I've spent time in both and all of the religious overtones in SLC are not for me. The alcohol rules are strange too. A friend of mine was carded ordering a Pierier (sp?). It's water! Move to Denver. The traffic is not that bad unless you live in the southern sprawl. If you live in the city limits you can get anywhere you need to go quickly. If you live downtown you can get everywhere important in under 15 minutes.

I'd tell you we'd miss you, but then I'd be lying... Denver IS MUCH better! Everyone please move there! We are no fun in Utah, please don't come here...
Really.
