Literal and figurative echos...

THe stadium is yes too big, but to construct another one would have made us more bankrupter than we are now.

is it just me or do americans need to bring up nazis and hitler and jesse owen everytime they write about the world cup now? it's in the freaking past guys, let it go. politics and sport shouldnt mix. obviously the berlin olympics made a mistake in that respect but talking about it now only stirs the emotions of misguided people who are likely to go german-bashing. hello, world cup here? cant we just all get along???

I think you are just sensitive.

They were talking about the history of the stadium, not committing German or Germany-bashing. Maybe you shouldn't be so thin-skinned.

History doesn't go away and it doesn't change. Just like when there's an event in Vietnam, we'll hear about that. It's history, it happened.

I agree that this generation shouldn't be persecuted for their grandfather's sins. However, another fact of life is that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it and that stadium is a grand reminder of that period of history. You can't change that, you can't deny it.

Get used to it. No matter how much you may not like the Nazis being mentioned, not only are they are part of German history, they are a part of WORLD history.

Again, that stadium is one of the great reminders of that time. That's all the article covered.

Just like for the longest time, there couldn't be any type of international event at the Muenchner Olympiastadion without mentioning the 11 Israeli athletes who were kidnapped and killed during the '72 Olympics.

That eventually faded, but what the Nazis did was so heinous, it will never be forgotten and it shouldn't be. If you choose to take people's recounts of history as a personal insult, then I think you have a problem.

sometimes people care about things that you dont. it doesnt make them thin skinned.

i dont like the article.

i work part time now at a primary school. kids are giving nazi salutes and calling german immi kids nazis. they are joking and mean no harm because it's not a respected topic for them. if every article about the stadium (and indeed, any other form of media concerning anything german) is going to talk too much about nazis then that period of history will gradually lose respectability.

ofcourse the period in history should be remembered.

but in an article about a world cup stadium, it should come as a passing reference ONLY. and i strongly stick by that.

if people want to know more about nazi history and the stadium, they can follow on from that reference and do some research for themselves, and feel the full weight of it. it's called respect.

but i guess ure too thick skinned for that.

The National Socialistic Party rules in Spain till the late seventies.

The spain was murders, no.

The National Socialistic Party rules in South America long time (and till yet),
they are murder states?
Surely no, the 2nd world war was only a econonomic war, when the commies ruled Germany, the war did come.
When the democrates ruled Germany, the war did come.

Did you all forget what Poland says: "We are in 4 weeks in Berlin".

Surely they was, and faster, but as War Prisoners.

I would never wish that National Socialistic Goverment back, but truth is truth.

I liked the article. It actually shows that contrary to what many non-Germans seem to believe, Germany is continually facing its past and not trying to hide it. That's certainly a good thing.

I didnīt mind the article at all. Iīve lived in Berlin for most of my life, and I donīt think anyone can avoid thinking about nazism and the Rieffenstahl films about the 1936 olympics when entering the Olympic stadium. It is probably the most prominent nazi building in germany, with the ideology engraved in every stone.
The renovation of the stadium hardly changed that impression. Now it is a nazi building with blue tracks and a roof. It is not the greatest football stadium in Germany, the atmosphere at Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg and Munich will be far better. You are sitting too far away from the field, the acoustic is poor, itīs simply not the greatest place to watch a football match.
Still, I like the idea of the final being played right there.
The German philosopher Walter Benjamin, who died escaping from the nazi murderers, wrote that the angel of history is blown into the future, looking back on a heap of ruins. Maybe that angel will enjoy to see a great party on top of those ruins.

The Riefenstahl films are actually great pieces.

And abpout this Jesse Owens guy. Germany still won the olympic by far in Olympic medals in 1936.

After having talked to him I came to the conclusion that he is as closen to a neo nazi as you can be without actually being a neonazi. Make out of that whatever you want.

What???

Why is he a neonazi???

1. Highways are first build in the world in Germany, under the Nationalsocialistic Government. In the USA they build Highways too. Are they Neonazis?

2. The first rockets (not the china firework) where build in Germany under the Nationalsocialistic Government.
The USA build and use them, are they Nazis?

3. The first jets was build in Germany under the Nationalsocialistic Government.
When you fly with a modern plane are you a Nazi?

I think it`s absolutely sh1t.
The same sh1t like "No Nazi, no rocket".

And with the Olypia stadium in Berlin, that was build for Olympia. Not for Adolf the needlessly.
Or do you think a pocket Hitler jumps outta the corner when you enter the stadium and jump around and yell?

I usually stay out of threads like this as I usually don't think all the crap you can read about German history on message boards worldwide is worth discussing.

******** you. I've actually defended PileD in the past, but this has to be one of the most offensive posts I've ever seen on BigSoccer. Ban this guy already!

And I won't even start to comment on your ignorance concerning Spanish Fascism or your use of the term "National Socialist".

I won't call him a neo-nazi - there is no proof for this AFAIK. Still he is not just romantic or likes old-fashioned traditions. He admitted that he supports far right-wing parties like "Republikaner", whose founder died some days ago and till his last breath denied the holocaust (and talked about his time in Waffen-SS).

Regarding PileD: I think he is either too stupid or too often drunk to understand what he is writing.....and yes, I'll take the yellow card.

It actually isn't a Nazi building, it was planned before the NAzis gaigned power. Hitler actually hated it for being too small. He wanted something monumental.

I actually think, that his English is just not good enough to express what he's really thinking, so this post looks much worse than intended. At least thats what I hope.

Well, his English may not be good, but I'm pretty sure I know what he means. PileD has a long history of nationalist, homophobic and hooligan gloryfying posts anyway. He's only missing Holocaust denial now...
