"To be honest with you, I don't think it was one of my best days," said Eskandarian, who now has nine goals. "Two minutes in, I got nailed in the head, and I don't know what hit me or anything. It took me a good 10 to 15 minutes to realize that I was in a soccer game. ... I just wanted to get myself in good spots and hopefully put a couple of goals away, and it turned out perfect."

The announced attendance of 13,024 was the smallest turnout for a weekend game this year. . .The first thing I noticed at the game was the small crowd - which was huge by Burn standards ;) .

Any thoughts on why it was so small? The only thing I can think of is people might have stayed away for reasons related to the 9/11 anniversary.

I think it was more of a beautiful day/ early start thing. These 4:00 games blow. I bet there's a bigger crowd next saturday night.

I think the nice day/ early start had a big influence. That and it's been a LONG time since the last home game.

I was thinking about that and I wonder if it wouldn't be better to have an early game (before 7:00 p.m.) start at say, 1:00 - the NFL doesn't have any trouble filling stadiums for 1:00 games (or 4:00 p.m. games for that matter) - not sure why soccer should be any different.

One thing I'd really like MLS to do is get rid of these extended road trips - not having a home game in over a month really kills the momentum for home fans - it's like the season ends for folks unless they have Direct Kick - assuming they even televise the game (e.g. the Chicago game).

1:00 Saturday vs 1:00 Sunday are two distinctly different things. More people have things going on saturday afternoons. Youth soccer, work, errands etc. If you move it to 1:00 you'll see half of yesterdays attendance. I wish they would make it 8:00 pm saturday night. Period. And that goes for wednesday games too. Getting into town on a weekday night is a major pain in the.....

btw, I agree with you on the extended road trip scheduling. Some of the early season "Freddy Adu inspired" momentum is gone. That and the teams record are not helping any.

"I saw a couple of their guys mixing it up," Eskandarian said. I saw them starting to reach for Dema's face, so I ran over there. I got knocked in the head. I don't know what happened there." What happened was a blow to the right side of the head. "I got a concussion. I was out of it. I don't really remember too much of anything. And then there was Bennie [Olsen] coming over there and [asking] 'are you okay?' I was kind of--what the hell's going on?"

Maryland Football home game

Navy football home game

Orioles/Yankees at Oriole Park..

All playing at the same time or nearly the same time..

Throw in the fact that afternoon games are usually as bad attended as midweek games (excepting of course the season opener)..

Additionally, as someone mentioned earlier, being away from home for a month doesn't help their cause either.. Out of sight, out of mind as the saying goes..

MLS has to do something about these long stances on the road (and at home for that matter).. 12 of 15 United road matches were in clusters (2 or more) and that is draining, especially for a team that is pure dreck on the road..

That's classic. Petke gets a Yellow Card and gives Esky a concussion in one move...I'm sure they were talking about that in the locker room after the match.

Because it's not just Texans who couldn't care less about the Dallas Burn?

I would hope MLS knows better than to have 1:00 Sunday home games in the east in September. Especially in Washington.

On that note, it was nice to see that the TV stations paid all kinds of attention to the "new security measures" that would be in place at FedEx field for Sunday September 12th. At a stadium in Maryland on the day after the third anniversary of 9/11. While not one of them did a piece on the game that was taking place on 9/11, in Washington, DC.

Thx,

Jay!

That's more like it!
The friendly confines of RFK, 3 goals and a little breathing room.

I just can't get enough of Stokes.
He comes in the game and we win 3-0!
Coincidence?
I think not.

Now that Stokes is in the mix, DC has a "shut down corner" for the first time sine Deion retired!

Well...both of them did get burned regularly when they wore DC team colors.
