United v Liverpool is a derby in a way. the cities are very close by.

Why is an Irishman supporting the Arsebandits anyway? United have always had the Ireland connection, originally in support and in modern times with players like Keano, O'Shea, Miller.

Who've Arsenal got? Thierry Henry? Jose Reyes??
Pehaps he`s `old school` Arsenal. Liam Brady, Pat Jennings, David O`Leary etc.
Theres a large Irish community in Finsbury Park, N.London who mostly follow the gooners aswell.

What's the difference between a rivalry and a derby anyway?

I love the way you cats talk man!! hahaha. I almost feel like I'm in England when I'm on these boards. I have learned so much about life in the UK simply by reading these boards. I know it's pretty freaking corny, but thanks

So are there many places in England where the Irish tend to live? My wife is 3rd generation Irish Catholic and I am of English ancestary on both sides. I let her read the message thread and she was curious.

In Philadelphia, there are entire neighborhoods made up of different nationalities. Like..., within 6 blocks of where I live, there is a rather large Korean population. Go 10 blocks in the other direction and you'll see businesses and billboards with Russian on them. The hood we live in was all Irish Catholic back in the 40's and the 50's and is still pretty much made up of Catholics

anyway, back to the topic at hand.

Another question about rivalries and this is directed at the English dudes on the board. In America, the New York Yankees are a hugely popular team. No matter where you go, you'll always find a Yankee fan. Likewise for the Dallas Coiwboys in American Football.

Are Arsenal and Man U the same type teams?

The Irish are everywhere in London ! but when my dad came over it was up cricklewood way, all the north london sort of area and of course when they first came over down in Liverpool way but now if you don't meet an Irishman on the street then you most likelyare in the carribean !

Just wanted to say Pat Jennings, Legend. I remember watching him pick those saves out of the air one handed and making it look easy. What a keeper.

Yeah, they`re the same type of teams.

I`d like to quote your other questions and answer them but I can`t suss how to do it.

My definition of a derby is two teams that are closest to each other (same city, county) while a rivalry is two teams or sets of fans that hate each other but are not neccessarily from the same area. Man U v Man City is a derby, whereas Man U v Leeds or Liverpool is a rivalry. Thats how I see it anyway.

As for the Irish thing, theres a good post on the Scotland,Wales etc forum called `A backgrounder to Rangers/Celtic rivalry` you might want to look at.

I`m a SouthCoast bloke and have lived in `WASP`areas all my life , so I`m no expert on Irish communities but Glasgow Celtic and Hibernian (Edinburgh) fans revel in their celtic roots as both clubs were formed by Irish immigrants.

My Mum is originally from Liverpool and she says that thousands of Irish moved there after the war - so many in fact that all people from Liverpool nowadays are called `Scousers` named after`scouse` which was a type of Irish stew which seemed to be their main diet. When my Mum tells anyone she`s from Liverpool - they say `so you`re a scouser then!` And after she`s given them the cold stare of death she says `NO, I`M A LIVERPUDLIAN!!` (its a protestant thing).

Theres also large Irish communities in Manchester,Leeds, and Birmingham.

Most large cities and towns in the UK have Asian, West Indian and more recently African and East European communities ( Portsmouth, where I`m from, being one of the exceptions).

Tottenham fans are called The Yids by themselves and others because of the large jewish fanbase that live in that particular area of North London.

In the States, everyone knows how much the Red Sox and Yankees hate each other and have been rivals for 100 years.

Help a yank out. Which two teams in the EPL , in your opinion, have the best, most intense and heated rivaly?

Also, since Everton is quite honestly, the only EPL team I am familiar with except for the internationally know Man u and Arsenal of course, who are the biggest rivals of Everton?

Btw, I was pretty much a casual soccer fan unitl a few years ago, I saw an Everton game on TV. Watching the caliber of play in that game really got me juiced and I started attending Metro Stars games more and more. You brits are so freakin lucky to have the EPL. I wish MLS was half as good.

cheers

mike

If for the whole of Britain, I would say that the most heated rivality would be Rangers vs Celtic but if you are referring to only EPL then it would be Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur...

Also Kilburn. I assume it's in North London as well? btw, the Irishmen at Arsenal when I started supporting them were Steve Morrow and Eddie McGoldrick.

there's a few pics on my site showing the Pompey vs Southampton Derby

click on the picture down on the left marked 'Scum'

it'll give you an idea of how intense our rivalry can get, (there's not many ones of the actual violence due to all the arrests from video and pictorial evidence so people were understandably wary of giving them out)

Congratulations on accidentally tapping into the easiest way to irritate the sh!t out of the unionist end of Northern Ireland. Tyrone is a more unionist area, to the best of my knowledge, by the way.

nothing wrong, i'm just interested why foreigners pick particular teams to support,

I can see why some support the glamour clubs but find the reasons for supporting the various teams interesting.

do you look at any english sites? i can post links if you want, the everton ones are really busy usually

how come Everton by the way?

the first EPL game I ever saw was Everton vs Man U. I had already heard of Man U and Arsenal (seems like every soccer fan in the states follows one or the other) so I decided to go to the web and look up Everton. They seem very involved in their community and they have a long history behind them That was a year or two ago and I've been following them ever since.

I am a Metrostars fan first though

Obviously, I have no ties whatsoever to Liverpool, they just struck me as a good scrappy team. I was intrigued by Rooney too.

i read this board, the official Everton message board and Blue Kipper. If you have anymore, definitely post them.

Everton do seem to have a fairly large following dont they

One of my good friends is from Liverpool and he got me into them. Been hooked ever since. They sucked, for sure, and I guess part of me felt sorry for them. I tend to root for the underdogs. I started getting up on Saturday mornings and listening to the matches, or watching when I could, and haven't looked back since.
