If you dont live in Korea for whatever reason, how often do you go back and visit? Why do you go back and visit or why don't you go back and visit? What are the most positive/negative experiences when you go back? Do you guys also have a military service that you have to commit?
i wish i could go back often, but i don't have the moolah to afford such a trek :(
Honestly, the most positive experience i ever had being in Korea (this was back in '96!) was just that feeling of being surrounded by...... Koreans! When one grows up in the US (especially multi-cultural LA), it kinda gets difficult to grasp just seeing one kind of people on the streets like in Seoul. But as soon as i stepped onto then-Kimpo Intl Airport, there was that feeling of... "i'm home"! There's no need to learn a new culture or language
The only negative experience i faced in Korea back nine years ago was the discrimination with them and the kyopo Koreans. i guess our way of dress gives it off, but my little brother almost got into trouble with these hyungs in Ulsan. To top it off, his Korean was (and still is) bad, so he had a bad time understanding them... To those kyopo Koreans in Korea right now, are there any changes or are we still gonna get some stick for being "foreign-born" Koreans??
And for military service... i recently found out that i am a Korean citizen (i didn't know that my mom transferred my citizenship from Brasil to Korea when i was an infant). This Saturday, however, i go in with my mom for our American citizenship interview. Sad how i just found out i am a Korean citizen, and pretty soon, i'll be giving it up :(
But still... when the time, money and opportunity arises, i am on the first Asiana Airlines plane bound to Inchon!!

There are definetly places in Seoul (not sure about any other city) that are still hostile to Gyopo Koreans, and foreigners as well. Usually, when I go to Gonguk Univ (East Side of town), I'll never bring my friends that could maybe give off the idea that they're from abroad. Yeouido / Yeong-dung-po at night is especially dangerous (not just gyopos but to anyone not familiar with their...um...'night culture'). Speaking English in some parts of E-hwa Women's Univ or even Hongdae/Shinchon could get a fight sparking here and there but normally, not as bad as parts of Seoul (in Gangbuk) where western influence is minimal. On the contrary, everyone in Apgujeong-dong speaks English :)\
Just for the records, no sober Korean will give you shite for living abroad. But when drunk, there's a slight possibility that that can change. When there are ajushees or random yangachee Koreans walking up to you asking why you're not speaking Korean then say "어쩌라고 ?" People around will think you're "싸가지" but it's helluva lot more efficient than standing there and listening to their b.s. Trust me, I've lived there my whole life being in that situation. But of course to be politically correct, just smile as if you didnt understand and walk away.

My former elementary school, Chungdam Elementary.

Whoa! That's my elementary school too!
I moved to Canada right after graduating from that school in 95'. 6-6 class of 94-95 to be exact. I used to live in Hanyang Apartment located right in across Chungdam Middle School, so I had to climb up that steep hill to Chungdam Elementary school every morning.
I haven't been back to that neighbourhood since then. It brings back such memories. I certainly didn't expect to bump into pictures of my old school in an english soccer forum of all places. :D

This is a great thread :)
Always wanted to visit Seoul, but with respect to post #283 on this thread, is it safe for fat, stupid white people who don't speak a word of Korean to go wandering around?

I think that's only relevant for koreans .. I doubt that it would apply to westerners, after all how could you expect non-koreans to speak korean?
But if anybody bothers you then just shout "shib-pal nom!!!" and run for your life :D
