If you dont live in Korea for whatever reason, how often do you go back and visit? Why do you go back and visit or why don't you go back and visit? What are the most positive/negative experiences when you go back? Do you guys also have a military service that you have to commit?

Korean companies usually send their employees to overlook operations in the U.S. branch of their companies so often times these men bring their family here. When their term is up, they relocate back to Korea. Same deal with Europe, South America, Asia, and Middle East.

International students stay in the states until graduating from college and relocate back to Korea. I graduate soon so I'll be back by 2006(depending on the level of slacking I do) But there are also international students who will do anything they can to avoid serving the mandatory Korean military service by choosing to become a permenent resident here. Which is understandable as the SK military is hell on earth.

Korean Americans usually only visit Korea for special occassions during the holidays, breaks, or to visit relatives. Their roots are firmly placed in America.

It depend on the circumstances. Some immigrants may go back once every year, or once every two years, or once every few years. The main reason would be to spend time with your relatives, friends et c - and as ppl have their own lives in overseas it would be difficult to go back as much as you want.

Positives would be meeting those you haven't seen for some time, do shopping and sight-seeing et c - Korea (especially Seoul) tend to change really rapidly in terms of appearance and trend. Negatives probably vary with different ppl, I suppose - some may feel a contrasting lifestyle or different mentality (esp. those who lived a long time away from Korea) little daunting or even feel aliented -shrug-

Emigrants do not need to be concerned with miltary service, if they have taken the citizenship of another country. Even those who haven't forsaken the Korean passport yet and just hold permanent residency status overseas are still exempt, provided that they are not staying in Korea for an extened period (for working and such). If you are young, hold Korean passport and are making a living in Korea you'll soon become eligible for military service and sent a letter for physical exam.

Damn, I didn't know there was a thread like this. Being a resident of SEoul, I'll try to get around and post some pics of my own later on.

And the "random apartments" that Soju posted are actually mostly high-end apartments in Korea. Most go over $1 million, which is a lot more than most Koreans will earn unless they hit the jackpot on the lottery. :(
