So Kerry's message has gone from "I served in Vietnam 35 years ago, and I'm now reporting for duty" to "I'm not George W. Bush." He'll need more than that, because I don't believe the ABB vote is greater than 50 percent. Unless Kerry actually articulates how he's a better choice than Bush, he won't win over any non-ideologues. Saying you're not Bush is a losing strategy, IMHO.

Yeah, but an interesting thing is that while the number of nominal independents has grown, the country has, by all accounts, become more polarized. How does one explain that contradiction?

Because most "independents" really aren't, they're either Dems or GOPs who aren't registered with their party.
