As great as it is that we got Rooney -- shouldn't that money have been saved for Gerrard? I don't know, maybe they have enough $$$ to buy Gerrard in January....but a central mid is a key position now that Keane is in the twilight of his career. Gerrard to Man Utd PLEASE!

I have to wonder if gerrard will really leave. Liverpool are heading in a new direction, are in the Champions league, and Gerrard may want to be a part of that. he could have left like Owen did, but he remained. For the moment I think he is staying there.
But otherwise Rooney was worth it, and will be worth it.

Gerrard seems to have brainfarts in the big games...he isn't a player to go into debt for, IMHO.

We have made a great buy in alan smith I first saw this formerly leeds striker when the played barca in the Cl when barca won 4-0 but in that match the young side struggled but i liked what i saw of alan smith and bridges.

If Gerrard became available, something tells me the purse would open again. And I think he would be a great addition to the team, providing a quality 3-player rotation in central mid without having to dip into the players who are all still just trying out for a position most of them aren't really ready for yet.

Realistically, if Gerrard were available, he'd be playing for Chelsea. They have more money and he could make the move without quite the same degree of controversy.

But pretty god at long balls, and something we are missing: someone who can thread the ball.

So Acryonym - are you just trying to up your posts count? Is that why you never edit a post to add in material? You always have 2-3 posts back-to-back with 1-2 sentences apiece
hehe - just busting your (*&^%s

I don't think Wayne was worth the money at the the time, nor is he now. But with his promise of talent I see it as an investment instead of splash. Remember J.S.Veron??? £28Million for a guy over his 26th bday, flopped hugely and cost United a loss of £13million when old to Chelski. Rooney however has shown a fracture of his potential, he will pay back his cost and will still be younger than 25 when his contract expires. So at the end of that it'll be either a long term success or a clever plan to sell on.

Rooney's a better investment than Seba. And Veron wasn't a flop in the sense that he couldn't perform: He often showed his class but was injured too often and made one to many mistakes, esp the CRAPPY backpass that got us eliminated from the Cup by Boro.
Rooney is DEFINITELY money well spent, as he's already shown that he can be the next Beckham in terms of media coverage, and don't you think that the first guy in Japan to pull on a Rooney 8 jersey and march through the streets would be much admired? I know I will be down here!!
