If I download Firefox, what changes occur to my IE? Is Firefox a seperate browser or simply an extension? On that same note, I remember reading a while back that FF is a little thin, and extensions must be downloaded to "fill it out." Is this true? If so, any reccomendations as to extensions?

I plan on reading up more, but if someone knows, a shortcut is always appreciated.

Firefox is a seperate browser. The only thing you HAVE TO MOST DEFINITELY download is the ad-block thingy.

It's a million times better than IE, and I happen to not hate Microsoft.

No changes occur to MSIE. I still use it if I need to update windows etc. If I go to microsoft pages, I need to use IE... plus, I always make sure that the web sites I design look good on IE, so I need it.

Firefox is definitely a separate browser.

FF is not thin. In its bare bones state, it has more features than MSIE... by FAR.

In truth, I had to download three extensions.

1. I downloaded an extension to give me mouse gestures... like Opera. NOT like MSIE. They have nothing like it.

2. StumbeUpon. Fun toolbar. May be available for msie. I recommended it in this forum, but someone must have thought it was something negative. It's actually a completely legit extension, and it's a blast.

3. I just downloaded a nice google bar. Full of features.

I did NOT download the adblocker thing that the other person mentioned. I don't know what it is actually. Firefox has built in pop-up blocking. I was just looking at the extension home page. It seems to block all kinds of stuff... banners... I dunno. Whoever suggested that... let me know what all it does. I might be interested.

In any case, even with three big extensions, firefox still loads very quickly.

The most important thing that it has is tabbed browsing though. MSIE is archaic in this respect.

I love opera... I always will... but a couple things went wrong with it.

It loads amazingly slowly. Too many sites don't work with opera. I don't think I've come across any that don't work in firefox... maybe 2 design things that looked weird or lost some functionality... but that's it.

I just downloaded it because it was "Top Rated" and "Most Popular." It hasn't had any negative effects so I am not complaining.

But, in all caps, you said you definitely had to download it.

What's it doing for you?

I know firefox has built in pop-up filters... that works beautifully btw... what's this thing do that makes it necessary?

Adblock is used to remove advertisements on the page. When I open this page in IE, I see an ad up top for a home equity loan and one on the left for JCPenny. With Firefox and the Adblock extension, those aren't there. It's not automatic, though. You have to choose what to block yourself, but it's pretty easy.

The biggest advantage, along with not having to look at annoying advertisements, is that pages will load quicker since your browser doesn't have to contact the servers to display the ads.

What he said. See the two ads on every BigSoccer page? Guess what? I don't pay to be a premium member, but I don't see them either.

The extensions I have installed...

Dom Inspector (standard, I believe)
Adblock
IEView (view current page in IE option on the context menu)
Googlebar
All-in-One Gestures (mouse gestures for browser control)
Basics (adds a "new tab" button)
Web Developer toolbar
Secure Password Generator
Down Them All (download manager that provides a list of every link on a page, you can select which ones to batch download)
Spellbound (spellchecker)
DictionarySearch
Stumbleupon
BigSoccer toolbar
BugMeNot (website registration handler)

Yup... It is.

Adblock

I downloaded this one after the others were talking about it. Pretty nice. I had gotten to the point where I didn't notice banner ads as much as before... but it's so much nicer without them! I have had it happen where pages wouldn't load because the banner was broken. Hasn't happened in a while... but I'm glad to have that issue be history.

Googlebar

I like this one. I honestly don't see why it had to be so thick though. It's such a fat toolbar!

All-in-One Gestures (mouse gestures for browser control)

This is definitely the mouse gestures extension to get. That other one with the little thing that comes up when you gesture is nuts.

Web Developer toolbar

Why would I want this? I'm not quite sure what it does.

DictionarySearch

Always like dictionaries!

Stumbleupon

This is one of my favorite extensions. I'm still having a blast fooling around with it. What's your username? Have you even used it yet? I just looked... no one's suggested the Columbus Crew page! You must not have been using it!

BigSoccer toolbar

I downloaded this. How can I find out when it's further along. I definitely do like it!

BugMeNot (website registration handler)

Wow. didn't see this one. Does it work for all those annoying nites like NYT, Chicago Tribune, etc. etc.?

We've kinda gotten off topic. Perhaps we should make a Firefox thread and a mod can move some stuff over.

EDIT: Hey... that's you, Foos.

If you don't create webpages, then you don't need it. Well, it's possible you might still like it, but chances are good you'd never use it. It allows "inline" editing of CSS, ability to turn off certain render features on-the-fly and see how a page degrades, view connection headers, cookies, etc etc.

Not much. Foos is the username. It's usually hidden, but I'll pull it up if I feel like "stumbling".

It's on version 0.1.3 right now. You can check your installed version in your Extension manager window, and you can actually just hit "check for updates" (or whatever the update button says) and it will go out and get an update automagically if one exists. You can also go to http://www.guilfoos.com/bigsoccertoolbar.php to install it, but I don't promise that the website links to the "bleeding edge" copy all the time. It should, but... http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/contrib/edoom/theyareontome.gif

Supposed to. To be honest, I just recently installed it and haven't tried it out yet.

I put in the Adblock and BugMeNot, and like them both so far.

Though with BMN I haven't got the hang of how to use the second choice after the first choice fails.

Found a link on Slashdot to an article that points out some of the more useful FireFox extensions. I just started reading it myself...

I tried a couple times yesterday to download the extensions, but everytime I tried the browser would stall, and nothing would happen. I'll probably try again this week sometime. PS, where do you find the BigSoccer toolbar, and is it only for FF?

BigSoccer toolbar is at http://www.guilfoos.com/bigsoccertoolbar.php, and is only for FireFox. If somebody wants to try it out in Mozilla, I'd be willing to repackage it for testing and add Mozilla to the approved list if it works.

It's very alpha still. It works, and works well, but there is still a lot of development to be done.

Ok, so Firefox definetly isn't working for me. I've downloaded and installed it, but I can't get any of the extensions to download, and the FF update page never loads...not sure why, disabled my firewall and everything, still no luck. Not a big deal in the end as IE is working just fine for me. Oh well.
