The world's first airing of legendary "lost" music and film footage of influential punk band The Clash has been shown by the BBC.

Former band members Mick Jones and Paul Simonon were interviewed on BBC Two's Newsnight about the reissue of their landmark 1979 LP London Calling.

It is being released this month to mark its 25th anniversary, along with discs of unreleased demos and studio footage.

Thursday's Newsnight played previously unheard tracks and showed unseen film. The unreleased demos make up part of the so-called "Vanilla Tapes", a collection of long lost Clash recordings recently rediscovered by guitarist and singer Mick Jones.

Absolutely necessary. I still get chills when I hear the intro to "London Calling". Every single time.

Did anyone get this? Was it worth it? I mean its the same songs as the original, plus demos, plus DVD.

I haven't purchased it, but it sounds great. I'm afraid my hubby will have a fit if I come home with it. He'll ask how many versions of London Calling does one person need.

As many as exist.

Like Barney says "After this case and the other case - we only got one case left"

"London calling to the far away town"

This is where you guys really hate me.

I consider myself a HUGE Clash fan, one of the biggest I know, but I'm pretty dissapointed, overall, in the second disc. It's mainly just choppy, lo-fi recordings of the them working out songs for the album. Interesting, yes..."New Clash Recordings" title worthy?, hardly. I need to listen to it more, and I'm sure the DVD portion will be worth the price of admission alone, but I had a big shrug of the shoulders when given a burned copy of disc two.

To be honest that's kind of what I expected from Disc 2. I can't fathom hot rocking Clash track remaining undiscovered for two decades, espeically since several comps have come out in the intervening years.

That's why they're called "demos"...

Someone asked me the other night if I'd suggest them buying this set. I've not heard it yet, so I told them "demos are really interesting to hear for a record you love, so you can understand the whole writing/recording process a little bit better, but you seldom ever need to play them a second time".

I LOVE "London Calling". I can hand type the lyrics to the whole album here. I have a framed copy signed by Strummer himself in my living room, for cryin' out loud. But when my copy of the new version arrives, I can almost guarantee I'll listen to that demo disc once only.

I am pumped, however, for Don Letts' stuff on the DVD.

I still enjoy the Beatles' Anthology series and I also like and listen to X's Beyond and Back. I think I'd get off on this.

But my point is that it's not even near that kind of quality or look into the making of the album. It's like a dictaphone recording of them doing instrumental versions. There are the occasional different lyrics and cool stuff like that, but anyone expecting anything remotely like the Beatles Anthology will be sorely disappointed.

Ok - I can see how that would disappoint.

Aye, Don Letts is the man...
