Wayne Rooney is vastly over-rated and over-valued. His game is more physical presence than skill. Tevez has more skill in his scar, than Rooney will ever possess. Man Utd should have spend the money on a replacement for Keane instead.

This is so ludicrous that I am not even going to discuss. Did u live in a hole over the summer since otherwise u would have seen Rooney play in Euro!

A brief overview of public opinion on Wayne Rooney:

2002-03 Season: Breaks through and becomeso the EPL's youngest ever player & scorer. Helps Everton to 7th place, and is hailed as a future world superstar.

2003-04 Season: Gets played mostly on the right wing, and in substitute appearances for Everton, scoring 3 less goals than his debut season as Everton finish 16th (iirc). Despite these facts and soem saparkingly performances for his coutnry, the same fickle fans hailign him a yearb efore now call him rubbish.

Post Euro 2004: Rooney has an amazing Euro 2004 (which I predicted beforehand), being easily Englands best player and perhaps the best player in the tournament before England go out to Portugal on penalties in the Quarter Finals. For the months of June, July and August, Rooney is the best teenage talent on earth. He is the best thing perhaps since Maradona and teams should be putting in huge bids for him.

August 31st, 2004-Present: Rooney signs for Manchester United for £20mn (with the potential to rise to £27mn) and suprise, suprise... he is suddenly 'overrated', 'overpriced' and will not be useful to Manchester United's championship aspirations (which are officially over after 4 games, by the way). Say hello to the new Diego Forlan.

But no, all these BigSoccer posters are so well informed, with such great memories, objective opinions, and not a fickle bone in their body - we should really take into account what they think.

But really he has always been 2 steps ahead, at 7 he played with kids 5 years older. At 16 in his first game in Evertons reserves at OT he lobbed the keeper from the halfway line. Went 3ft wide.

of course the boy is over rated, those that generally speak negativly aren't really looking at him objectivly, he is a fantastic player with a huge potentional which is why the fee was so large, that said some posters act like he is the new pele, give him one full season at a top club and we will all learn what he is really made of. i think he is a big prospect but some of the praise is over the top which is the same as tevez is getting now and C.ronaldo recieved earlier, young players seem to get this kind of treatment.
between the 3 we have the new pele, maradona and George best according to the media.

Rooney is the most overrated player of all time, maybe even more so than Henry. How many goals did 'the next Pele' socre last season? And his 4 goals at the Euros came against poor opposition yet he's proclaimed as the greatest player on the planet. And he's a scouse scally. I rest my case.

Its funny how a fan could take it upon himself to take a rivalry beyond the bounds that players and managers do... really, its quite amusing... rivalries... the opiant of the masses...

I'll say this quietly so as not to offend...

Only supporters from Manchester will understand.

Who's the more Cro-Magnon - the people who get bent over an exposed breast on national TV in family time, or the people who wouldn't want the best players in the world on their team just because they were born in the wrong town.

Smith and Rooney aren't the best players in the world. Anyway, I wouldn't expect you to understand.

Oh my dear friend.....you STILL don't get it. We DO understand why you feel the way you do, it's just that that sort of thinking is frowned upon in the civilized world.

Rooney is not overrated. Few players can charge through defenders in the manner that he displayed at Euro 04. Overpriced?? perhaps...but I'm willing to bet that Man United recovers that money rather quickly through the sale of merchandise and jerseys.

* in the 2003/04 season, rooney started 26 games out of a possible 38 and was a sub in a further 8. he was suspended for 2 games. to suggest that he was mainly a substitute is not true. there were actually calls from some evertonians for him to be played less to 'protect' him.

* whenever he started, he was always played up-front. occasionally if we were behind in a game and Ferguson was brought on, then rooney was moved to the left/right of a three-man attack. he was only used on the right-wing in one game as i can recall.

* he scored 9 goals in the league, compared to 6 the previous season - 3 MORE, not less.

* everton finished 17th

* no evertonian that i ever spoke to referred to him as 'rubbish'. we were too busy blaming our midfield for their lack of creativity.
