Lets see:

England: SG and Carra
Ireland: Finnan
Spain: Alonso and Garcia
Germany: Hamann? I'm not sure
Poland: Jerzy
Switzerland: Henchoz
France: Cisse
CR: Baros
Finland: Hyppia
Norway: JAR
are the Ozers playing? If so, Kewell

By my count between 11 and 13. Seems like two observations emerge: we've got a fair amount of talent in this squad and Rafa doesn't have a lot of players around to work with before the Baggies game.

I guess we can use the thread to discuss games and reports over the next week or so.

I think he's been dropped. I remember hearing that tidbit during the Bolton broadcast.

I looked it up, and Garcia isn't in the Spanish squad. Alonso is though, and he should get some playing time.

SG apparently picked up a knock in training while on England duty, but they expect him to be fit to play this weekend.

Saw that today -- welcome to the board! Two rational posts in one day -- you've seriously upgraded to newbie standard.

Thanks! I didn't realize I was supposed to talk crap as a newbie. ;)

Oh, and back on the subject, does anybody think Carra will get a shot in the England squad? Or is he, as I'm starting to believe, just there to make up the numbers and help out with training, like a practice squad member?

I think Jamie's versatility is a big reason why he's always going to be a valuable addition to an England "squad." It's always nice to have a player that can play on any side if someone goes down with injury. It's also possible (and I have often heard it said) that his versatility works against him, as nobody knows whether to classify him as a CB or a FB (the old jack-of-all-trades but master of none). So to answer your question (without being privy to the England training sessions), I think he does get a fair shot as he is called in and trains with the squad prior to the matches. I do not think he is there just to make up the numbers, but for his ability to be cover for the entire back line by himself.

Sort of an unsung hero role, I guess. It does say a lot about a player like Jaime who was brought along as a central mid, but his love for Liverpool and desire to play everyday meant he took on the task of learning new positions. Maybe people like Dyer should take note. I hope years from now he is regarded as the type of player and professional academy kids should strive to be.
Unfortunately, like you said, it seems like he'll always be one step behind those that have a specific position. I'd love to see England play a 3-5-2 and throw Carra in the back with Sol and Terry.

Old Sven ain't never playing a 3-5-2. Jamie is a player any manager can love though-- cover for 4 or 5 positions and always ready to step up.
