Admittedly this is an area I know little about. I would assume European footballers are rich jerks (not all) like American athletes, but since I don't get the tabloid press from the UK, I can ignore that side of them, and just enjoy the game for the game. In the premiership, I have no idea who is a convicted felon and who is a volunteer at the youth hostile.

That being said, I saw a report that said Rooney signed a "massive" (second favorite English word, next to "horror") deal worth 16 million pounds over 6 years.

In US dollars thats about 30 million over 6 years or 5 per. Is that right?

Hell, the Denver Nuggests 12th man makes 5 million per year. Several American athletes make that (the 30) or really close in one season. Is 5 million dollars considered a huge salary in the premiership. Huge in the NFL would be about 8+, MLB 18+, NBA 10+ . . . . just curious?

That's around 50,000 pounds a week. Near the roof for a player at United, that's why it's shocking. The galacticos earn over 100,000 each, but Real have a ridiculous wage structure.

50K a week is near what Everton had offered to keep Rooney, btw.

And debts that get wiped out by the govt every year...

Amazing. This boy was really viewed as the hottest property on the market by United. If we could step it up to just under 30m for Rooney, but not Ronaldinho... someone must think a lot of this boy.

Don't start me on that one... we should have spent 30 on him to be honest with you... we would not have had to buy Smith or Rooney... Saha would have been necessary still but if you look at it that way, we would have saved money...

Ronaldinho would have easily won the worst hair award in the entire EPL, let alone Man Utd. Spector would look like John Edwards next to him.

If that list is accurate and is just wages then we need to give Henry and Paddy a raise.

What you've got to remember is that on top of the wages (say £5million/year), you've got the initial purchase price as well......which would take away from what the player gets.......and goes to the club.

As far as I'm aware, pro sports clubs in the US don't "buy" players like in Europe. So a £47million purchase of Zidane (say $90 million) has to be added to the £7 million/year he gets. 5 year contract = £35mil + £47mil comes to just over £80 million pounds over five years ($150million or $30mil/year worth of player)......

Not an indication of what the player himself gets, but it shows that every penny is not simply given to the player. The comparisons with sports like MLB could be more accurate if it's looked at like this.

And £18m/year for baseball players?! I'm still in shock from that. NBA? maybe, good athletes. NFL? maybe. MLB?? surely not?! I guess it's just the US fascination for slightly podgy 30 somethings standing around chewing tobacco. Fair do's.....it's got the history and the fans are there, so the players get shitloads. But I compare it to cricket in England. The players do about as much........but cricketers get jack. Makes sense?

Who knows......I'm just jealous.

You have to remember that MLB plays 162 games in a season, so there is more money from gate and television. And that is 18 million dollars (around 10M pounds) a season. There may only be 5 to 7 that make that much. I know for sure that A-Rod, Jeter, Manny, Bonds, Sosa make that, I was just comparing the two.

Oh....18 million dollars. Well, that's still a lot I suppose. 162 games a season??! I guess that would make sense then with the gate receipts. Does that include playoff games though?

I went to an Arizona Diamondbacks game last summer in Phoenix, and it was a pretty large stadium (around the 40k mark) but it was about half full if that.....and I paid 1 dollar for my ticket!!! Very very strange experience. It was like I wasn't actually at a sporting event at all. Spookily quiet crowd......and we just sat and ate hotdogs for 3 hours. Odd. I'm guessing that towards playoff time the crowds pick up a bit, and also the ticket prices go above $1!!!

Went to see the 49ers play in Cincinnati though.......and that was a lot better! Pity it was snowing.

Not bad to get a $1 ticket. Arizona were the champions back in 2001, but they have fallen off a lot the past couple of years. Also tickets tend to get a lot cheaper on Monday and Tuesday. But yeah in general baseball crowds are different, especially since there's no cheering or anything until it looks like a team is about to score.

162 games doesn't include playoffs. 8 teams make the playoffs, and tickets tend to be expensive (mostly $50+... certainly nothing for $1 :)). Teams can make good money there too. I think the big money in the US though comes from TV deals, though gate receipts obviously help. It's pretty confusing altogether.

For some perspective Ronaldihno makes about 9 million euros and Vidka made about 65,000 epr weel at leeds.

If we had bought Ronny we would not have had the season we had last year and Rooney would not have seemed necessary.

Baseball teams outdraw every team in europe but have drstically higher ticket prices and play 3-4 times as many games.

So how long is the season then?? There must be like 4 games per week or something?

NBA is like 80 something......same as the NHL. Plus the playoffs if you make it. I just can't fathom having so many games in MLB? In a way it makes the first 100 odd pretty worthless??! (well not worthless, but you know what I mean).

I can now see why some games charge $1 a seat!

Season starts First wek of april and end by october or so. Playoffs take longer.

Here is a copy of the mets sept schedule

http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=nym

As you can see in sept they play about 13 days in a row then have one day off then play 9 days in a row.

Teams typically play the same team 3-4 games in a row then face the next team 3-4 games in a row.

And when games are rained out thye reschedule them on days thye already have games. So a team could play two games in one day (a Double header).

Does playing the same teams like four times in a row in four days not take away some of the excitement? Wouldn't it be better if they mixed it up a bit? Or is it simply down to geography...?
