Here is what caught my eye.

Of Europe’s largest countries, France has the lowest number of large-city dwellers. Only 10.4 per cent of French men and women live in the country's larger cities.

I think this might be the main reason why French club soccer has been so poor in Europe over the years. Sure their are a lot of factors involved such as the higher taxes French teams have to pay but I think the population factor has a lot to do with the lack of European success. When you have only 10 % of the people living in the largest cities, and your largest city(Paris) is not a huge football town, that has to be a big factor. All the big European teams who have had success are in large cities who have a lot of money and France doesnt have as many large cities as the other countries.

This "10.4 %" number isn't exactly relevant as it doesn't include
suburbs. This one is more realistic:

38% in the top 20.

Well even if you include the suburbs there's still only 4 cities with over a million inhabitants. I was wondering is there were any cities besides Paris that could support more than 1 professional club but I guess not since no city besides Paris at least 2 million inhabitants. I thought Marseille was a bigger city than what it really is.

It's got to be related to the various cultures.

I don't know why but it seems to me that Spain, Italy, and England are more into football then we are. More die-hard fans I guess. Just a feeling.

Interesting thread.

I'm not sure about that. There are plenty of diehard fans in places like Marseille, St. Etienne, Lyon, Lens and Nantes. Those places are into football just as much as any other country. Of course you have places like Montpellier, Nice, Strasbourg, Paris where thats not the case. When your largest city is a 1/3 of your entire population and it is not a big football city that has to have something to do with the lack of successs. Your 2 largest cities only have 2 clubs total in the top division. Your other cities aren't as big compared to the other European cities who have top teams,

I undestand it's quite a pain in the neck to go to Parc des Princes if you live in the burbs, but for somebody with a subway stop nearby, it's pretty easy if you don't mind the crowded subway cars.

I lived in Paris for 3 years, 5 mns from a subway stop. During those 3 years, I went to the Parc once, that's right, you heard me, ONCE. And I like PSG.
